Looking for information about my Great Grandfather Hugh Gunn, born June 22nd 1859, Glasgow. He had two brothers, John born 1856 and Thomas born 1866 and a sister, Mary born 1864. Parents were Thomas Gunn and Margaret Riley. He married Mary Burns in Birkenhead in 1879 and had three children, Thomas (my grandfather) born Birkenhead 1880, Mary born Poplar 1882 and Margeret born West Ham 1884. Cannot find when he died. He was in the Merchant Navy but cannot find any entry of death in maritime records.

Born in Glasgow on the 16th of October 1883. His father was listed as John Lauchlan - soldier. He was placed in a military school at a very young age and was in the army as a very young man. He was in the Boer war or the first war.I believe his regiment was the Royal Field Artillery. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I cannot find any trace of him. It is possible that he had relatives or some connection in Caithness. I remember him mentioning the name. He died in October of 1952 in Surrey England. I am looking for info on my G Grandfather and his family. George Arthur Thompson was born in Ryde (Isle of Wight)in 1876, son of John William Thompson (born Cowes 1838) and Maria Stout (born Wimborne Dorset). The family were in Ryde in 1861 and 71 and all but John were still there in 1881. (John appears to still be living though, as Maria is shown as being married). All appear to be missing from the 1891 English census. Family info leads me to believe they may have moved to the Aberdeen or Glasgow area. Both John and George were hairdressers/barbers. The only clues I have are from her Death Certificate which tells me her occupation was domestic duties and she was 74 when she died on 20 Feb 1938 in Brisbane Qld. Australia. Looking for further information on Euphemia (born c 1843) and Peter Cowie (born c 1854) born Lanarkshire, Glasgow children of Mary Campbell and Andrew Cowie - a second officer aboard the Royal Charter and was lost at sea, at the time of the 1861 Scottish Census both children were living with their Aunt a Barbara Morris in Girvan, with no mention of the mother. There is a story in my family that I had an uncle who died in WW1. He was said to have lied about his age so that he could join up. I have been unable to trace him and would be glad of any available information or help. His name was Lowry (spelling?) Todd. He was probably born in or around Dunmurry, Belfast, 1895-1900, son of John Todd and Florence Evelyn Wilson. The family moved to Glasgow about 1914. I don't know if he joined an Irish or a Scottish regiment.

Margaret Hunter was born in 1857 in Glasgow. She married a Paterson then a Sweetland, but reverted to Paterson in later years.I can find her on 1901 census but nowhere else. She is supposed to be related to john hunter the surgeon 1728-1793.

Looking for info on the McGill family. The family were living at 174 Govan Street, Glasgow at the time of 1891 census. Parents Joseph (1853), born Glasgow and Mary (1853),nee McKenna, born Ireland, children Ann (1883), Susan (1885), Joseph (1887), Mary (1887), Charles (1889), William (1892)(GG Grandad)all were born in Glasgow. Joseph's parents were Charles McGill and Ann Kerr and Mary's parents were Charles McKenna and Ann Gilhooly. Joseph was stationed at Edinburgh castle at the time of their wedding in 1881. William went on to marry Isabella Patterson Patrick in Edinburgh in 1917. Any info on any of these people would be a huge help as I seem to have hit a huge brick wall with the Scottish side of the family. Look forward to hearing from someone soon. Dawn

According to a transcript from a family bible my g-g-g-grandmother - a Barbara Campbell, whose daughter Barbara Campbell Morris emigrated to New Zealand - was a sister? of Thomas Campbell, Scottish Poet buried at Westminister Abbey. Is there anyone out there who can shed light on the names of this poet's sisters, the only definite name I have been able to find is a sister Mary. Any help would be very much appreciated.
I am looking for some help with a partial entry I have from a trascript from a family tree sheet from an old family bible, the entry has an Alexandra Campbell (sister to a Thomas? and Barbara Campbell) married to ? Cowie, 2nd Officer of Royal Charter (was this the actual name of a ship?) lost at sea. It would appear that Alexandra and Cowie had at least two children, a daughter named Jemina Gasgoine and a son named Peter who may have emigrated to New Zealand, any help would be much appreciated.

Looking for any information on James Morris, who Captained the Steamboat Tempest for the Anchor Line (offices at 51 Union Street, Glasgow) and whom was lost at sea, after leaving New York Feb 13 1857 for the return journey to Glasgow. Residence on a will registered October 1859 is shown as John Street, Glasgow and widow is recorded as Barbara Morris. Does anyone know where and when James was born and who were his parents? I am looking for information about William James Smith and his wife nee Mary Stewart of Glasgow area who had at least two daughters: Mary Helen (Ellen) Smith born about 1875-77 and an older sister Margaret Smith. William James may have been an instructor at a fabric design school in Glasgow and Mary Stewart may have had some connection to the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. The two daughters ended up as home children in Ontario Canada.
