red mail Andrew Ewart Mather
My grandfather, Andrew Ewart Mather was born in Scotland, around 1888. I'd like some information on where he spent his youth. He married Ellen Alexander Tennant and they moved to Canada in 1908 I think and then moved to Russell, Manitooba in 1911. My grandmother's family (Tennants) had a marmalade factory in or around Carluke I think.
Euphemia Paterson
I am researching my great grandmother, Euphemia Paterson, born in Carluke c1850. Her parents were James Paterson (1800-1878) and Margaret Pollock (1806-1901). James was born in Glenholm, Peeblesshire, and Margaret was born in Carnwath. I believe that Euphemia was the youngest of at least 9 siblings - Margaret b.1828, James b.1831, Alexander b.1833, Agnes (1835-1915), Janet b.1837, Mary b.1843 and Grace b.1846. I have only found a baptismal record for William, and cannot find one for Euphemia (maybe due to spelling variants for Euphemia and/or Paterson!) On the 1851 census she is at Lainshaw Muir, Carluke, aged 6 months, with her parents and 6 older siblings. On the 1861 and 1871 censuses the family are living at Roadmeetings, Carluke. Euphemia married James Wright (1855-1918) in Beadnell, Bamburgh, Northumberland, in 1877. On the 1881 census they were living in Alnwick where James worked as a coachman and ostler at Alnwick Castle. By 1891 they had moved to Newcastle and James was working as a barman (after the decline in the use of horses). They had 9 children, and Euphemia and James died within days of each other in 1918, of the Spanish Flu. Any new information, especially about Euphemia's early life, would be welcome.
