There are still weighing hooks in the garage. Please can anyone let me know any more info about Billy?
red mail L/Corporal Oliver John Thomas Smith
L/Corporal 8392 Oliver John Thomas Smith "C" Coy 1st Bn Kings Own Light Infantry died 07 Jan 1915, aged 28yrs. He was the first soldier to be killed to return to Ramsgate and he was given a full military funeral in St. Lawrence Churchyard. The East Kent Times reported there were hundereds of local people lining the route to pay their respects from the house in Bloomsbury Road to the Church. There was scarecely a dry eye among the women folk, for many had sons and husbands at the front, and many of the sterner sex had to battle hard with their emotion when the coffin covered by the Union Jack, on which rested the deceased's cap, bayonet, and belt, was lifted from the hearse. He died at the London General Hospital in Wandsworth having been wounded at La Bassee. He was in some of the fiercest battles during the opening weeks of the War. He was born Dec 1886 Thanet, the son of John Smith and Eliza Celia Smith (Newman). He served in the London Fire Brigade at Deptford and Southwark Fire Stations before enlisting. He married Emma Grace Wrench Dec 1911 Camberwell and they had a son called John Oliver Smith born 03 Dec 1912 Southwark. Emma Grace Smith married William Winship Sept 1924 Faversham. William Winship died 25 Sept 1934 Kingston-Upon-Hull. Emma Grace Winship died Mar 1976 Bracknell, aged 86yrs. John Oliver Smith was residing with his mother at Chartwell House, Eton, in 1939, employed as a Chartered Accountant. It is not known what became of him. Any help regarding the Smith family would be much appreciated.
