red mail messrs LEEMING & Co Varnish makers
The Leeming family of Meopham have been involved in making varnish since at least 1886 at Sole Street,Meopham. The family - widow Frances LEEMING and her sons, Thomas Henry LEEMING and William Brook LEEMING, lived at NEVILLS HOUSE, Norwood Lane, Meopham. The works were still in operation well into the 20th century, when in 1928 there was a huge fire at the factory. Large stocks of inflammable spirits caught alight and the storage tanks exploded. Part of the Chatham main rail line was damaged and closed as a consequence. Does anyone have any further information on either the varnish works - is it still in operation? - or the LEEMING family.
