red mail Mary Tyler who married Peter Fairway on November 20, 1622 in Hawkhurst, Kent.
Could somebody please help with this? There are no actual christenings in Hawkhurst but there are a Mary Taylor christened 3 Aug 1600 to Jhon Tayler and a Mary Tyler christened 11 Sep 1603 to Larrance. These are in Cranbrook, Kent whichs right next to Hawkhurst. Her and Peter call a son John and not Lawrence but that doesnt actually prove shes Johns daughter. Peter was the (probably) son of David and they dont call any child David so naming patterns werent important to them. Please help thank you!

red mail Charles Oswin, died Hawkhurst 1890
My 3 x great grandfather Charles Oswin lived at Little Pitt Hall, Hawkhurst from I think 1848 until he emigrated to America in1855. He then returned to England after his wife died in 1869 and came back to Hawkhurst. In 1881 he was living at Northwood House Asylum and had married Sarah, the daughter of Dr William Harmer who founded it. He died in 1890 and was buried in Hawkhurst. I gather that most of the gravestones were destroyed in the war but wonder if there are any records of them. I also discovered that the asylum burnt down in 1890 - does anyone know when? And does anyone know anything about Little Pitt Hall? Thanks.
red mail Good family of Hawkhurst
Hi, My great great grandfather Richard Good was born in Horsmonden (1809/10), but by 1841 and through to the 1860s was resident in Hawkhurst. I need to track him backwards from this period, and his descendants. He was married to Sarah Eave (married 1832). Six of his children were born in Hawkhurst - Thomas Richard (1845) Isaac (1847) Elizabeth (1849) Richard (1852) William (My great grandfather) (1855) Jacob (1858). Although I'm trying to ascertain who Richard Good's mother and father were, any other info about the Goods in Hawkhurst would be fantastic. Best regards, Nick.

red mail Stapley in Hawkhurst Kent
I'm after any information about Stapley in Hawkhurst Kent up until 1900. I'm particularly interested in any details of Monument Inscriptions in St Laurence churchyard regarding Stapleys, although the details must have been written/recorded BEFORE WW2 as I'm aware that the particular gravestone of my ancestor was destroyed by a WW2 doodlebug. I'm also keen to see the original photo for a picture of a certain house on The Moor that appeared in the original second "Hawkhurst Remembered" magazine (which was published in 1982 & contained some 1882 historical details in particular).

red mail Tickner, Hawkhurst
I would be interested to hear from anyone with a connection to my Tickner family in Hawkhurst in the 19th century. My 2xgreat grandmother, Ann Tickner, was born in Hawkhurst, the daughter of Edward Tickner and his wife Ann (poss. Wheeler). I am unsure of the local geography and have been unable to pinpoint their census locations. I was browsing through a 19th century Ordnance Survey map today and found that there was a Tickner's farm along Slip Mill Road or Lane, which has today been built on with housing and a golf course. I would like to uncover whether this farm did have a connection with my family, and whether or not there are any other Tickner connections in the neighbourhood. By the 1871 census, Edward was farming across the border in Sussex (Etchingham) where the family also had connections. So, was Edward farming Tickner's farm in 1841, and where was he bailiff and land agent for in the 1861 census, before going off to farm 32 acres of Etchingham? Any help gratefully received, regards John

I have found many of the farms and cottages listed in the 1841 census on a map of Hawkhurt in a Hawkhurst Village Appraisal book from 1984, but these two places are no longer on the map. Can anyone tell we where they were? I will be traveling to England at the end of May and would like to see where my ancestors lived. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

red mail Wale / Killick family in Hawkhurst 1901 Census
Further to my earlier entry regarding Jesse Wale and his family, I note that in the 1901 census, the Wale family lived with Henry and Annie Killick at Gillsgreen in the same house (near the station I believe). Henry Killick was a farm manager and Jesse Wale a Cabinet maker, so any further recollections would be most gratefully received. In the same house, were George Killick, Arthur Wale, Charlotte Wale (my great grandmother),Hilda Wale, Katherine Wale and Jessie May Wale (my grandmother).

I wonder if anyone has any information about my great grandfather, Jesse Wale. He was a cabinet maker, decorator, upholsterer and mattress maker, antique furniture dealer and Restorer. red mail Who really was My gggrandmother?
Hello there from Brisbane. I am trying to solve the mystery as to the identity of my GG Grandmother. My G Grandfather, Henry West, married in Sydney in 1858. He gave his age as 21, and the place of birth as Tunbridge, Kent. His mother's name was given as Mary Anne Epps, and father- Henry (crossed out and Harry inserted) West, carpenter. I have managed to trace a baptismal entry to Ss Peter and Paul, Tonbridge on September 18, 1836. However, in this entry his father's name is Henry, carpenter, but his mother's name is given as Harriet. Their place of residence was given as Hawhurst. Why wasn't the Baptism performed in the local Church? I can find no trace of the family in the 1841 Census, but have located a Henry West, Carpenter, of Seven Acres in the 1840 Pigot's Directory. Where were they when the census was taken? Was my GG Grandmother Harriet or Mary Ann? I would really appreciate any advice as I have really come to a dead end, and woud love to be able to trace my heritage further back if at all possible. Thank you.
red mail Marchant family
Been researching my family for past couple of years. They lived in Hawkhurst from at least the 17th century. Can certainly go back to John Marchant, innkeeper at Bodiam(1811-1892), whose father was John Marchant, a labourer. Suspect that there is a connection back to John Marchant (1725-1804), son of Robert (1702-50), but the multitude of Marchants in the area is proving confusing. Would love to hear from anyone else doing Marchant research.
