Hello, I am looking for any descendants of this couple who were both born in the early 1800's and came to New Zealand in 1857. I am particularly looking for names of brothers, sisters and parents for both as I have some conflicting information that is driving me nuts. Rose Johnson nee Quinn born about 1885 to 1887 was my aunt but I never knew her she was the eldest of a large family my father the baby ....Her married was Johnson but she could have married twice and lost her first husband in the 1914-18 war....sometime in the 1920's they moved to Gillingham as he had gone to Chatham Dockyard brother Tommy when at a Royal Engineers went to visit her in the 1950's and I remaber him saying they still lived in the same house they moved too...she was reputed to have had between 18 and 22 children but this could have been the melding of two familys....Michael Johnson in the RAF during the 2nd war reputed to be the youngest .came to North ShieldsNorthumberland to represent his mother at his grandmothers funeral in 1940/41 as I was posted with my husband in both Hong Kong and Malaya between the years 1959 to 1962 it is possible that this is when Rose Johnson died and I never was told .....Rose was baptised RC and I assume her children were too.....

I am searching for information about William GILBERT (c. 1797- 1872). His father's name was Abraham. William was born in Doddington, Faversham, Kent, lived in Shepherdswell in the 1820s, lived in Chatham (1834 - 1861) and later in Gillingham (1871). He married a woman named Sarah BOULTON from Kent (c. 1811-1847), then Harriet WHITE (c.1803-1883) from Gillingham. William and Sarah had at least ten children: Catherine (b. c. 1827), Hester (b.c. 1828), Oliff (b.c. 1829), Matilda (b.c. 1831), Eliza (b.c. 1833), Elizabeth (b.c. 1834), Robert Abraham (b.c. 1836), John (c. 1839 - 1877), Harriet (b. Aug. 1841) and Emma (b. 1843). The older children were born in Shepherdswell and the younger in Chatham. William was a miller and a farmer, as was John. John's wife (Harriett Mary SKINNER, b. c. 1840 in Rainham) continued to farm after his death. She lived at Beacon (Becon) House, Chatham Hill, Gillingham in the 1880s and married George WEEKS.

Caroline Sturgess married William Braham Robinson who was later the chief constructor of ships at Portsmouth. The family often used Sturgess or Robinson for second names.

I'm looking for the SIMMONS family from Gillingham. My husband's great grandfather was Thomas SIMMONS born in 1815 in GILLINGHAM but moved to NORFOLK, firstly as a policeman and then ran the Post Office in Saxlingham Nethergate. His father was JamesSIMMONS, died 1829. Thomas married Susan WILSON in Norfolk (she may have been a widow named Elliott at the time of the marriage). Thomas died in 1902 and Susan in 1908.

Looking for information regarding parents of John Challis and Elizabeth Annie Rich who married 29 Sep 1906 in District of Bromley, Kent. The father of John was named Thomas and the father of Elizabeth Annie was named Charles. I would very much liketo find out who the mothers and any other relatives may be. As George was a shipwright, they had travelled via their birth place of Sheerness, Sheppey, to Wales,London,Chatham, and Gillingham. Their children were: George Arthur born 1892; Harriet Edith 1894; Minnie Ethel 1897; Florence Mabel 1900; Robert Henry 1901; Elsie Winifred Clara 1904; Doris May 1907. George Arthur went to Redwood City, California about 1920, and Robert Henry has been lost since he stayed behind in Gillingham when last of the family emigrated to New Zealand in 1922. From Calendar of Cecil Papers Vol 3 Page 310 No 645b Henry Shorte to the Queen 22nd February 1587-8 He and his ancestors have been tenants of the Manor of Gillingham co Kent for 100 years, and he has rebuilt the mansion house; but the Queen has granted a lease in reversion to John Heyborne, and he has been thrust from the farm. Prays for a lease in reversion to commence after the end of Heybornes lease. Note by Dr. V.Dale that the Queen refers the fine to the Lord Treasurer, and a book is to be made.
