She married an ancestor named Isaac Brown in Dover in 1794. Neither of these two can be traced after this date,although there is a record of a Mary Brown dying in Deal in 1797 but listed as a widow. I have George Alfred ETALL (aka MARYOTT) b bef 7 Aug 1839 in Dover, KENT. George is the son of James ETALE and Elizabeth M MARYATT. "George Maryott ETALL baptised Dover St Mary 7 Aug 1839 son of James and Elizabeth". James ETALE was thought to have had a livery stable located between Walmer Castle and Dover, as George stated he "held the Duke of Wellington's horse" in a 1922 newspaper article about his life in the British Navy and service during the Crimean War. George has been found registered as a seaman, arriving in Australia c1861. George used the name George Alfred Maryott in Sydney, Australia and his Death is listed as being in Sydney in 1923. It is also possible that there was 2 THOMAS GILBERT WELLS in the same generation but this is not confirmed. Another name of interest is ARTHUR JOHN WELLS, who was apparently in the BUFFS, but appears to link to the above, but who until recently I THOUGHT I had no knowledge of . He was a brazier at the time of his marraige then later he became a coppersmith. William and Sarah had 7 children. Sarah, John, Emma, William, Robert, Ann and Thomas. William died in Wolverhampton in 1871 and in 1881 his wife died in Chester. I would like to know who his parents were and any other relevant information.
My Father in law who served in WW1 & WW11 was in the Royal Navy. He had a lifelong friend whose bname was Dick but I'm note sure about his real Christian or Surname. i know the address is correct. The house was sold in 2000. His wife's name was Nora. Information would be appreciated.

Alfred McPherson (or Macpherson) was born in Adelaide, Australia, about 1876. He gave his calling as a Seaman, but also served in the Royal Engineers and the Labour Corps. His father was Andrew McPherson, believed to be a Stonemason of Scottish descent. Alfred was black, a matter of some concern when he married Emma Goodwin of Faversham in 1918 at Dover. They had 3 sons, all of whom we knew, before she died in 1923, after which her family "sent him packing." I'm looking for information about the death and burial/cremation of John Goodall. He was born in Bray, Berkshire in 1871, and married AmelIa Pay in Dover in 1899. He was A career soldier and spent most of his life living in Dover,Kent and Woolwich London, Then Kent. He and Amelia parted around 1818/19 , but it is thought he spent the rest of his life in Dover. He may have died in 1962, although this is not proven. The Authorities in Dover have checked their archive records, and he is not buried in any Of their Cemeteries. Has anyone any information on William John Adcock of Dover? He moved to Dover from Nottingham in 1862, and was a large building contractor with premises in Maison Dieu yard. He died in Kearsney in 1907. He was Mayor of Dover twice and made a Freeman of the town. Any information on his business, family, and especially on his last residence which was called "Merton" in Kearsney, would be especially welcome. "Merton" was in Park Road, and there is a bungalow there, on what I assume to have been the site, still, and called "Merton". However it is clearly not the Adcock house. What happened to the Adcock house between 1907 and the 1920`s? Was it bombed during WWI?? Many thanks for any information.

I am looking for parents of Edward Relf 1816 - 20.02.1894. He was a Journey Man (one who has fully served his apprenticeship in a trade or craft and is qualified worker in anothers employ) / Cabinet maker who married Sarah Willis born 1815ish died 15.08.1869 aged 54. They had 7 children, Jane Elizabeth 01.07.1838, Edward Jnr. 1840 - 1912, Sarah 31.01.1843, Mary Ann 02.12.1844, John 27.09.1848, Emma Susannah 22.11.1852 and William Frederick 24.01.1855 who left for Australia in 1878. The 1841 Cencus shows Edward & Sarah both aged 25 and children Jane aged 2 and Edward aged 10 months living in High Street, Parish of Charlton Dover. The 1861 Cencus they lived at 2 Bowlinggreen Lane in the parish of St Mary's, Dover but no mention of wife or daughters Sarah and Jane, but adds Bertha (also known as Emma Bertha) born 24.05.1858 who is Jane's daughter. Edward (1816-1894)remarried to Sarah Ann 1825ish - 07.12.1892 aged 67. Their father also had a brother William Relf born 1813ish died in the workhouse 21.03.1902 aged 89, he was a Cabinet Maker. My grandfather Arthur William Blackman (1923) is still in the area but would like some outside information about any ancestors older if anyone has it! William Champion Smeed married Mary Ann Williams c1870 in Bengal, India. They were my gg grandparents. I think Mary was probably born c1851 Plumstead or Woolwich area. She died in 1890 at the age of 38 in Woolwich. William died at the Leytonstone Workhouse in 1900. Is anyone else out there descended from this couple please?

I'm interested to hear from anybody who has information on John Michael Hoffman (aka Karl Hoffman). He was born in 1850 in Wuerttemberg, Germany and emigrated to Dover in the mid 1870s. He married Mary Jane Claringbould in 1876 and they had nine children: Lydia, Grace Rhoda, Hester (my grandmother), Carl (aka Charlie), Louisa, Naomi, Caleb (aka Steve), Marion and John Reuben. After the outbreak of WWI, the male members of the family changed their surname to Harris. John Hoffman was a pork butcher in Dover and died in December 1912. He may have been related to Henry Zoller who had a pork butcher business in the town.

I am a professor of art history and I am making a research on Mary Adelaide Walker, a British painter who lived and worked in Istanbul, Turkey from 1856 to 1904. In 1904 she went back to England and died at 2 Ennismore Gardens in 1905. She left all her pictures and manuscripts to her sister, Clara Fanny Montrose Curtis who was also living in Dover, 12 Harald Terrace. She died on the 18th of October 1906. William Cessford was the proprietor of the Esplanade Hotel, Dover for many years - at least 1861 to 1901. He was born in London in 1832 and married Elizabeth Charlotte Wood - she was born in Dover and died there in 1880. Then William married an Ann Aspey on 5 July 1883 in Warrington. But something went very wrong and very quickly with this marriage because Ann remarried in Dover on 25 December 1886 - she described herself as the divorced wife of William Cessford. Has anyone come across any report on the divorce of William Cessford and Ann Aspey at some time between July 1883 and December 1886? I would love to find out more. Thanks Elaine

I am seeking information concerning the life of Charlotte COLLINS, particularly the period from the time of the 1891 census to her death in Dover on 26 March 1917. Charlotte was born at Buckland probably about March 1851, daughter of William Harding. Charlotte married John Elgar COLLINS on 31 October 1874, possibly in Ramsgate. The couple lived at Alkham at the time of the 1881 Census and at Minster at the time of the 1891 Census. It would appear the marriage broke down as Charlotte next appears in the 1901 census, a fish seller and boarder in the Driscoll household.

My father was a Football referee in Dover for seasons 52-53 to 54-55. He was linesman for Dover v Tottenham Hotspur A in 1954 but I wonder if anyone has any old programmes from the same period that may contain dads name among the officials, that they could scan for me please. he kept no records of his games (or programmes) but does recall doing a game at Snowdon and also a Junior Level Cup final at Crabble, the latter probably as linesman. I am currently researching the family history and would like to add some form of list of his games he was involved in. Unlike players whose games,even from years back,appear relativly easy to ascertain no one seems to keep records of the Match Officials apointments. I have tried Kent league,Kent FA,Kent Referees Association plus the National associations mentioned. I do know that teamsheets are written out by each manager prior to the game and hande dto the REf,whose name I believe appears on it. These are in books with a duplicate sheet , which I believe is retained in the book forfuture reference. So when a book is complete what happens to it after say 10 years. Were anyr eaders activly involved with the Kent league (Div 2) in the early to mid 1950's, or can anyone suggest anywhere else I can look

I am trying to trace the descendants of James Cornwell Goldsmith (b1827)and Emily Morris (b1832)in Frittenden. They had one son James (b1871)who married Sophia Musk in 1896,who had a daughter named Daisy in 1900. He had four sisters, Emily who married Charles Thonas Kemp a police constable, Mary Anne who married Alfred Nimmo, Frances who married Frederick Manser and Sarah Jane who married James Gilmour my ggrandfather who was in the Seaforth Highlanders and fought in the boer war. After James Gildsmith died on Parsonage farm in Frittenden the family moved to Longfield Road in Dover. My gggrandmother died in 1922 in Dover. Am also trying to find any Morris's in Cranbrook area who think they might be related.

I am looking for any descendents of my GGrandfather He was the son of James and Mary ( Nee McDowall) form County Antrim. they had 2 children Edward Montgomerie & Gledney Smith. Davis. Edward born 1841 lived in York St Newton Ayr Married Robina Anderson Dau of John & Jean (Nee Vance) Gledney born 1844 lived in Buckland Kent, was a gas works engineer in Dover till he died 1912 age 70, he is in the Buckland cemetery. His first marriage was to Elizabeth (Jeffrey) daughter of William & Isabella (Nee Ewart) she died in child birth on 13 Jan 1867 the child was William John Jeffrey Davis he lived with his father & Gledney then Married Margaret Baird Dau of George and Susan (Nee Forbis) (Margaret died in New Zealand 23 April 1919 & is in the Onehunga Cemetery) they had 8 children Eliza Jane she married Joseph Benjamine Rayner I have found their grave in the Buckland cemetery, Susan Baird Davis she immigrated to New Zealand (she is in the Ohehunga Cemetery with her Mother) married Richard Bently, Martha 1877, George James 1881, John B 1883, Gledney Smith Davis immigrated to NZ Married Theresa Nee Hendl of Puhoi NZ they had 1 son Louis Joseph (my father) Gledney was lost at sea in 1916 when dad was 4 yrs old. Albert Hugh 1878, Lingard Howell Montgomery immigrated to NZ & died of wonds in France 20/6/1917 Fighting in the 23rd unit NZRB. if there is anyone that can help I would love to hear from them as we have no family on the Davis side at all. I have been to Dover 3 times but strike the brick wall. their address was 2 Edgar Crescent, Buckland Kent. the Ancestors and Descendants were Residents of County Antrim NI, AYR Scotland, Birmingham Warwick, Ardstraw C.Antrim, Buckland Kent Auckland NZ
