lOOKING FOR INFORMATION ABOUT SIMS FAMILY FROM BROOKLAND IN KENT. My great grandfather was Stephen Burgess Sims of The Homestead Farm (now called Walnut Tree Cottage). He lived there with his wife Ann and 8 or 9 children. My grandfather was Hubert George Sims, married to Elizabeth Ann (lived in Staplehurst). Hubert's children are Rodney and Brenda (Brenda my mother) Rodney now living in France. I visited Brookland today (15/08/09)and found references to Sims boys who fought in Great War in the church. Did anyone know siblings Percy, Norbert, Ernest, Harold, Hubert, Clara, Jack?
red mail The Royal Oak
Relatives of mine were landlords/ladies of The Royal Oak, Brookland. Richard & Maud GRAINGER ran it from 1930 until 1938. Frank LAMBERT ran it from 1938 until his death in 1952. Mary LAMBERT, his widow, ran it from 1952 until 1976. Does anyone remember any of the above people and/or have photos of the time? Alternatively, is anyone researching the GRAINGERS or the LAMBERTS?
Searching for CHILDREN of AGNES SUSANNAH MORTLEY (1863-?) m 1900 George BROWN in Hastings. Witnesses are JONES. Also of her sister CHARLOTTE MARGARET MORTLEY (1869-?) m 1893 Thomas George MANN in Hastings. The 1901 census of Brookland shows an 11month baby girl, b Hastings, at her Mortley gmother's home. The name is illegible - who was she? Any help gratefully received!
red mail MORTLEY
Does anyone know anything about EDWIN/EDWARD WILLIAM MORTLEY bapt 5/10/1856 in Brookland, mother Martha Mortley b 1837, father unknown. According to another family wedding cert he might have been a carter, but had died by 1900. I have been unable to find any relevant official documentation other than of his birth. Any help gratefully received!
red mail Mortley, Drury, Dryland
I'm interested in any details that anyone has of the MORTLEY, DRURY AND DRYLAND FAMILIES IN Brookland, Brenzett and surrounding areas esp on the Romney Marsh. I know they were resident in Watson's Row/Cottages near Pod Corner for a long time during the majority of the 1800s. There were 8 children; Sarah Snoad b 1820, John Edward Pellett/Drury 1825-1897, Stephen Mortley 1828-1882, Susannah Mortley 1833-1844, Lucy Anne Mortley 1835-????, Martha Mortley 1837-1914, Hannah Mortley 1839-1844, William Sinden Mortley 1942-1912. I would be particularly interested to hear from descendents of Stephen and Martha, as they may be able to help solve mysteries concerning their identity. Their mother Mary Mortley nee Drury had a chequered history, being tried and sentenced to death before being reprieved. Her husband William Mortley(snr) was an ag lab who got drunk in the local and set fire to another's clothes!
