This page is for entries which apply to the whole of Ireland, eg general information on Ireland , one name studies covering the whole of Ireland, and enquiries when you have no idea which part of Ireland your surnames came from.

Surnames in Ireland, like England, do tend to be strong in certain areas. First names are sometimes claimed to have regional patterns as well. It's worth checking Familysearch provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for clues.

Looking for any information about John William Toolan born 1861 in Ireland (believe Sligo). My father said his mother was Ann Corcoran, his father was Patrick William Toolin. We are told Ann died and Patrick married a Winny Lee. Young John lived with relatives for a while and came to England when he was approx 13 to an uncle/cousin in Kippax, possibly named Rogers, near Leeds. He was to be apprenticed to a boilermaker but worked as a labourer on the road gangs and eventually became a coal miner, hewer. He couldn't read or write and so the name was spelled different ways. His daughter said he pronounced it Tooalin. I can trace him and his family from May 1891 when he married Mary Elizabeth Layton in Bradford at St Patrick's, Westgage, to his death in 1914 at Bevers Street, Goldthorpe but nothing about his parents or life in Ireland or any possible siblings. He was my grandfather and I would love to know more about him.
