red mail PATTEN; farmers of Cole Green Farm - (Brent Pelham - Hertfordshire)
Hi and hope someone may be able to help me. I am trying to find out about my great/great/great grandparents Simon and Sarah (nee HAYDEN/HAYDON?) Patten who were farmers of Cole Green Farm. Simon died in abt 1832 and after his death his widow Sarah was in both the 1841 and 1851 census, a farmer of "Cole Green Farm" employing 6 men. The only info i have of Simon is his marriage to Sarah in 1812. Some people have his parents as Joseph and Hannah (nee Balk) Patten and that he died in 1832 in Langley, Essex and so of course am not certain if Simon farmed at "Cole Green" or only Sarah after his death. I have no info on who Sarah's parents were but in the two census she was born in Langley, Essex. I live in Australia and decided i to go on google maps to find out where Brent Pelham was and noticed that Cole Green Farm came up and the buildings are very large and stately. Simon and Sarah had 4 sons and 4 daughters and their eldest daughter Susan married George King Prime who was a farmer of over 300 acres of Anstey, Hertfordshire and after Susan's death in 1856 George K Prime married Susan's younger sister Charlotte. Anyway hoping someone can help with ANY kind of information on the above. Thanking you and cheers, Judy

red mail sawyer- pleasant lane school - (Bricket Wood - Hertfordshire)
red mail Brookmans Park - (Brookmans Park - Hertfordshire)
Near Hatfield, Hertfordshire. My grandparents lived in Mymms Drive when my mother was born and my parents in Moffats lane when I was born, in the intervening 29 years the family had moved away from Brookmans Park during WW2. Moffats Lane Just over 50 years ago, one got off one's bike and pushed it up Moffats Lane. It was impossible to ride up for the Lane was a farm road, an unmetalled country lane with the north side lined with 1930s houses and the south side, farm land. Houses on the south side were built in the 1960's. At the top of the hill was Mrs Robinson who ran a nursery school and just around the corner from there was the Sunday School. These have since been knocked down and nuew houses built in the 80's and 90's. When you reached the top, Moffats Farm was a working farm, though a small one, run by old Mr and Mrs Canham. The farmhouse itself was not, as spick and span as it is today. It had stood there for 500 years. Originally it had been owned by a Mr Moffatt, after which the Lane was named. Legend has it that his daugher who as "Little Miss Muffet, sat on a tuffet, eating her curds and way". On the right-hand side, an old lane led down hill to the old disused sewage plant, where children used to explore. This was before the Parish Council bought Gobions Open Space and the whole area was wild and adventuresome. By the 1960's it was a park with a childrens play area. Children walked or cycled to the Primary School, unlike the practice now. The school, was presided over by the Welsh Mr Harris ("Harry Boy") who believed in the cane for small children. But there were some excellent teachers there, notably Miss Raine, and most of the parents got what they wanted, success in the 11+ examination. A number of shops centred around Bradmore Green, for there were no supermarkets. WJ Duncum, the gaunt, energetic butcher, ran his shop very efficiently. He also taught Institute of Meat students at the Technical College. Bread was to be had at Harman's the Bakers, now Jan's Pantry. Plenty of Fish was available in Linton's shop near the present chemist. Groceries were bought in Moon's shop The chemists stood where it stands now, under Mr Coombes senior, as did the Spenholme's greengrocery. Thus all the basic needs could be met on Bradmore Green. Newspapers were delivered by Saxby's where stamps, etc were also sold. The County Library was also there, but if you needed cash from the bank you had to go elsewhere. If you wanted to move, there was only one estate agent in the hut on the green.Bradmore Green was a better, more varied shopping centre then than now. Altogether, Brookmans Park was a quieter and pleasanter place to live in than now. There was more open space, fewer cars, no school traffic rush hour, nor a commuter one, public transport was adequate, and the shopping more varied. Employment was more secure, 'house for sale' rarely appeared, and burglary was almost unknown.

I am looking for further info into the Keen and Element family. Ethel keen was my real maternal grandmother who would have lived in "Croxley green" as it was known then when she was married to a greengrocer my grandad Cecil herbert Element. Wife to my grandad during the(late) 1920's and '30's who unfortunately became too ill after the birth of my mother Born on December 7th 1929.(their only child) Ethel was admitted into watford hospital for the mentally ill and died sadly some years after. I know so little about Ethel her early life her siblings and parents place of birth what they did for a living siblings etc.. I only know their names: Jessie Keen(my G.grandmother & William Keen my g.grandfather.) My mother was Mina Brenda Charlotte Element and at least for her early years would have lived in Croxley green and was doted on- brought up by her two aunts my grandad cecil's sisters in the 30's I imagine...until cecil remarried. Minda brenda Element was born and brought up in Croxley Green Hertfordshire, and I am looking for anyone in their late 50's 60's 70's and beyond! who MAY have known her (or of her)as a young child before my grandad Cecil re-married. My mother died in 1973. My step grandmother was Doris Arnold; the only grandmother I ever knew(a spinster)who would have been in her early 30's I think, when she became grandad's second wife My mother would have been around 12yrs old on their wedding day.But whether they still lived in crioxley green themn, i am not sure. (Doris had a brother called fred? I think and at least 1 other sibling.) I am especially interested to know or hear of anyone who still remembers the Greengrocers shop: "Element & Sons" or might have known any of the keen and Element family or even my mum? Also any Elements/friends who ran the greengrocer's shop after him whom I presume he carried on after the death of his father Henry Element" who originally owned it..(a handsome moustached fellow married to Eliza.) The greengrocers was called "Element & Sons" (I have photos of it) and I think possibly around the New road area in croxley green?? during the 20's 30's 40's & 50's at least? He married again after the untimely death of Ethel. My grandfather Cecil H. Element who ran the greengrcoers shop at this time also had at least 1 sister and a brother. Though "Sydney" (or sidney?) died in the first W.1 at the age of 19 and his name is listed amongst the dead in the cemetary nearby.Anyone with strong links to this area with elderly living relatives would they please get in touch? Many thanks.
