I'm looking for information about MARGARET CARTER, christened 1 Feb 1893 in Great Berkhamstead, daughter of HENRY CARTER AND REBECCA (last name unknown), who married WALTER BARDEN/PAYNE 23 December 1916 also at Great Berkhamstead. Walter's mother was ANNIE EMMA BARDEN and his father was JABEZ PAYNE, but he was possibly illegitimate as he usually appears as Walter Barden. Any help would be gratefully received!

I am looking for information about Edwin & George. Edwin went back to England in July of 1919 to visit his sister, which looks like her name was Mrs. R. G. Gorman. It states on his passport that he wanted to get there to see "old town again" and her sons and sons-in-law because they just returned from the war. She later married a John ARNOLD in the midlands and lived the remainder of her life in Fazeley, Tamworth, Staffordshire. She died about 1863. Francis (b. 4 Apr 1795) was the son of Francis (1759-1812) and married Sarah Emmett on 1 Apr 1828 in Walworth, Surrey. He returned to Berkhamsted to be a butcher and died 10 Apr 1851. His wife subsequently ran the butcher's shop until her demise in 1869. They had five children: Francis (1829), Sarah (1830), Charles (1832), Thomas (1834) and Harriet (1839). Who can add more detail? Francis was born about 1759 and died 9 Jul 1812. He married Esther (or Catherine?) Ironmonger of Northchurch on 11 Oct 1791 and had six children: William (1792), Hester (1793), Francis (1795), Humphrey (1797), John (1799) and Thomas (1801). I would love to hear from descendants of Joseph & Mary Payne who moved to Berkhamsted in the late 1890's. Their children were Sarah b 1884, Ellen Jane (my grandmother) b 1887, George James b 1890 Elizabeth Mary b 1893, Kate b 1894, William John b 1898, Bertha Annie b 1901, Edith b 1904 & Joseph Bertie b 1906. William was killed in WW1 in Belguim. Joseph was the landlord of the Royal Oak in Berkhamsted. My grandmother married my grandfather in London in 1916 & moved to Bentley a village near Doncaster.
William Lovett was born in Chesham about 1794, married Lydia Hakesley in Berkhamsted in 1815. Children include Mary b. 1818, Edward, born 1822, James b 1824, Rachel b1828 and Juliana b 1830. Edward married Ann (nee Cox) in 1849, eventually moved to Hammersmith where he was foreman of a creosote factory. Children were Ann (my great grandmother), Alice, Elizabeth, James. Would be interested in hearing from any other people with these in their tree. Please note - there is another William Lovett born about the same time in Chesham who may or may not be related.

She married Harry Mothersole, a bricklayer and builder. They lived at Denning Cottage Potton End Berkhamsted where they had eleven children including my grandmother Matilda. Elizabeth died in 1942. Of the thousands of Gomms in this area, I am looking for Ann nee Halsey's ancestors. She married Joseph Gomm born 1792, son of Joseph Gomm 1756, and produced a huge family. Joseph Gomm and his wife as Ann Gomm, died in 1868. Fanny Gomm married Alfred Josias Rogers, family in Westminster village section and is my ancestor. Joseph Gomm, as above, was the son of Joseph Gomm 1756 and Elizabeth Bedford (a widow). Joseph 1792 had brothers John Gomm 1785, the year his parents married, James Robert Gomm 1787, Thomas Gomm 1791, William Gomm 1795, George Gomm 1799 and sisters Rebecca Gomm 1789 who married William Sear in 1809 and Mary Gomm 1802. Joseph 1792 was married in 1817 and had sons William Gomm born 1827 and Henry Jesse Gomm 1836. See individual entries for these. He had daughters Sarah Halsey Gomm born 1817 who did not marry and died in 1873, Charlotte Gomm 1820, Ann Gomm 1821 died 1843, Emma Gomm 1823-1825, Lucy Gomm 1833-1836 and Ellen Gomm 1839 as well as Fanny Gomm 1831 who died as Fanny Bramwell in 1903. Ellen Gomm married Walter George Smith and had Arthur E Smith 1867, Cecil Welbank Smith 1870 and Edith Smith. I am seeking information on the Mothersole family of Berkhamsted. Harry (Henry Edward) Mothersole, son of William and Caroline Mothersole (nee Parish) was born at Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk in 1854. He married Elizabeth Allen and raised a family of ten in the Berkhamsted area. He was a bricklayer and builder like many of the family. In the early 1900s they moved to 16 Denning Road Hampstead before he built Denning Cottage in High Street opposite Eddy Street in Berkhamsted circa 1912 where he lived with his family until his death in 1929. Matilda, one of his eight daughters , was my grandmother. She married Frederick Harris in 1910 and later lived in Exeter before emigrating to Australia in 1925. I would appreciate any information on the family.

I am searching for any ancestors and/or information on the Margrave family who lived in Berkhampsted, Hertfordshire. I have managed to trace them back to 1730 but have been unable to find anything earlier than this. It is quite possible the family originated from another county such as Buckinghamshire. One ancestor - William Margrave born 1756 was the son of William Margrave and Martha Hill and he was married to a Phebe(Pheabe) Fountain. Mark Margrave born 1779 was his son and was married to a Sarah Green in 1801. Grandson - George Margrave was born in 1805 and married twice, his first wife was a Mary Ann Redding and his second wife was Mary Ann Collins. He had a Linen Drapers and Haberdashery business in Castle Street and his father Mark was a shoemaker in the area also.
William Pitkin
Churchwarden of St. Peters, in Berkhamsted aft 1610. He was a Justice of the Peace, Member of Parliament, Agent for the Duchy of Cornwall in Berkhamsted abt 1612. This was the time of enclosures in Berkhamsted, in which he was involved with the Duchy lands. He was duputed to select 30 acres 'lying west upon the former inclosed grounds (Colharbour Farm), north uppon an highway leading from the great heath towards Aldbury, east uppon the opn Frith (Common) and south uppon the old fence of the Parke,' for the purpose. Left legacies to his children and grandchildren. Receipt in the accounts to the vestry includes 3/4d from him for the burial of his son George, in the church. Electd Sidesman in 1612 and signed the vestry proceedings that year, presented on 9 Apr 1613 in which he contributes another 3/4 d for his child Martha's grave. The Prince of Wales visited Berkhamsted in 1616 to be greeted by an oration by a student at Berkhamsted Grammar School. In 1613 a levy for repairs to the Church reveals that William's rae was the 6th highest in the Parish based on holding 23 acres arable, 2.5 acres meadow, and other wealth. One of the first 'Gentlemen' of 12 new Capital Burgesses when King James I granted the town a new Charter on...
