My gr grandfather, Thomas Leach, was a baker and confectioner who was born in Cradley, Herefords (1901 Census). He married Sarah Ann Whillock after he had moved to Birmingham, on 5th Feb 1882 when he was 23. His marriage certificate shows his father as either Josiah or Isaiah Leach, a labourer, but I haven't been able to find any trace of the family in Cradley other than George who was approx 9 years younger. One witness to the marriage was Henry Adams, who we believe also came from Cradley - family anecdote is that they were both bakers who moved to Birmingham at the same time, presumably looking for work. Thomas and Sarah's son, my grandfather Thomas George Leach, was born in 1886. Sarah was District Midwife for Aston (Birmingham)until 1927 or so - she died in 1936. Old Vicarage - Garway - (Garway - Herefordshire)
My mother, Bessie Eileen Jones lived at the Old Vicarage with her mother Sarah Ann Jones (nee Pearce - Bevan) and her sister Minnie around 1925. There were two other half sisters, Maud and Mary. The family had fallen on bad times and my grandfather, William John Jones had disappeared. My mother and her half sister Mary attended Garway School. My mother was sent to a House of Mercy in Horbury, Wakefield in 1927. What was the story about the Old Vicarage? Was it a refuge? I would be grateful for any information.
