red mail very long shot!!
Hi, I am looking for the name of a relative who lived in Southampton in the late 50's early 60's. She was elderly then & lived in a tall thin house on a road with houses on only 1 side. On the other side of the road was the back wall of the Pirelli slipper factory. Her 1st name was Grace. She had a male lodger who lived on the top floor of her house. Her daughter was called Rosie & she lived on a dairy farm in Petworth. I don't know if she was a relative but we called her Auntie Grace. My grandmother Ivy Amy Lillian Thresher ( aka as Dina Crow) was the connection. We used to visit when I was a small child & I can remember walking to the house from the station & seeing the old town walls. I know this is a long shot, but hpoefully someone may remember her, or the name of the road she lived on Thank you Annie

red mail Sharpe/ Turner
Hi Trying to find out some details on my great grandparents. Great grandfather: William John Sharpe (b. C1897 in Hound, Hampshire) Great Grandmother: Susannah (Susan) Turner (b. C1897) Married in October 1921 in Lymington. My Grandfathers name is George Sharpe, born December 1926 in Southampton. From some vauge information I have, Susan never actually had her birth registered but was christened in a village outside Cambridge and when she got to the age of having her Old Age Pension they had to track that record down and give her birth date as 10 days prior to when she was christened. William John Sharpe was a POW during first world war and she was a nurse ( rose to Matron) who went to France during the first world war. Great grandads parents (I believe) came from Wales (Rhonda Valley) walking from Canal Build to Canal build ( he was an ex miner) via Cambridge and ended up in Southampton when the Docks was being built. The other side of the family came from Hedge End they had a small holding there and also near Ringwood there was a branch of the family who were commoners and could let their animals free on the forest.

Sir William Petty (27 May 1623 - 16 December 1687) My late grandmother, Dora May Petty (1895-1976, born: Lockersley, West Wellow), and her aunt, Elizabeth May Petty (born: 1870 married: James Piddington), maintained that they were descended from Sir William Petty. Dora May Petty was the daughter of Charles Leonard Petty (1869-1901, who married: Kate Pearce, lived in a cottage at Carter's Clay, West Wellow, Hampshire. Charles died of diptheria aged 32). Dora May and her sister: Lillian Kate, following the death of their father went to live with their aunt: Elizabeth May. There was also a son born to Charles and Kate: Philip George who married Lily Hancock. At the age of 10, following the death of his father Charles, he went to live with his grandmother: Maria Pearce, at Butler's Wood, Newtown, Romsey. Charles Leonard Petty was the son of William Newman Petty (1832 - 1904, born at Husley, Hampshire). William Newman married Elizabeth Duell Hurst. William Newman's father was John James Petty (1786 - 1863) who married Sarah Ruth Goddard. John James father was William Petty (1756 - 1823) who married Mary Goddard. The Petty's were builders/carpenters/agricultural farm labourers. William Newman Petty owned a workshop on Gazing Lane, West Wellow. William Newman Petty build "Hacks" which is now a retiremnet care home (Oaklands). For many years the family lived at a dwelling called "Buttons", a gabled cottage built in the 19th year of the reign of Charles II. It was at one time, together with four other thatched cottages, nearly opposite a Poor Law Cottage. This is now a listed building. I am requiring additional information on the parentage of William Petty and his wife Mary Goddard (1754 - 1834), and would appreciate any help in my researching the family history back to Sir William Petty. I am more than willing to share information I have with genuine family history researchers' who are also tracing the Petty family.
I am trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of my grandfather William Robert Courtney. He was born on 28 January 1880 and died, according to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, on 18 December 1916. However, a web-site lists his death as occuring some time in July 1916. He was married to Florence May Andrews, born 2 dec. 1887, died 7 Mar. 1961. Their children were: John Andrew, Florence, Nellie, Lilian Frances, Robert and Ethel Courtney. Florence May Andrews remarried in 1921 to John W Ridget. During the First World War he served as a Greaser on HMS Armadale as a Merchant Marine Reserve. His death is recorded as that of drowning. My late father, John Andrew Courtney, (died 09/01/1987) informed me that his ship was sunk by a German U-boat having been torpedoed. However, the HMS Armadale saw little enemy action and was recommissioned after the war in 1919 and was eventually scrapped in 1936. A war memorial plaque listing the deaths of 248 identified casualties can be found located at the Wallasey (Rake Lane) Cemetery, Liverpool, near to the Cross of Sacrifice. His name is also listed on the ~southampton Cenotaph. In addition I would like to find out who the parents of William Courtney, my great, great grandfather were. He was born about 1821 and married to Mary Symonds, who was born about 1822 (1841 census). If my research is correct I believe William's mother is Sarah Courtney. Sarah's father was John Courtney, (occupation: fellmonger), born abt. 1771 and whose wife I believe is Esther, born abt. 1772. All the above mentioned lived within the Southampton and surrounding area, principally Civil Parish of St. Marys, Southampton, Hampshire. I am willing to share information and would like to contact anyone who has relevant family history.
