red mail Alfred John Wallwork
I am looking for information about my Great-great grandfather, Alfred John Wallwork, who was from the Manchester region. According to a brief family history that was put together around 1992 based almost solely on the recollection of my grandfather, Geoffrey Haynes Wallwork, the basic information about him is: b. April 1853 d. June 1921 in a place called Glossop, Derbyshire. The booklet starts with, "Alfred John Wallwork was a bookbinder by trade..." It also mentions that he was in the military and had a nickname locally in Manchester of 'Old Kroger' (or something that is similar to that) I believe his wife's name was Mary E... (I do not know what the 'E' is for) the history mentions that she owned a haberdashery shop. This is the point where the story gets confusing because my Grandfather's memory wasn't 100% sharp! AJW may have simply gone by 'John' and he had a sister called 'Betty' but so far I've not found a 'Betty' in official documents. I do know she was quite a vocal spokesperson for the Manchester division of the Women's Suffragist Movement. I'm hoping to find out - who was 'Mary E'? Who were her parents? Who were AJ Wallwork's parents? Who is Betty Wallwork? Any help would be great! Laura Brown My line--Geoffrey Haynes Wallwork > Alfred Wallwork > Alfred John Wallwork.

Curious that I have found a Family in the 1881 Census for Manchester with a father William , wife Alice and a daughter named Gertrude , although no factual tie can I find that this was his family ? and no sign of a son Herbert. Manchester Newspapers lookup please
Hi, I wonder if someone has access to the Manchester Newspaper Archive. I need someone to look up newspapers in 1838/1839, the best bet would probably be the Manchester and Salford Advertiser 1825-1848, although there are others. What I'm looking for is a report on the trial of Edwin Buckley in Lancashire Quarter Sessions, Salford. He was first tried in January 1838, prosecuted by Ann Standing, and again twice in May 1839 prosecuted by Thomas Chapman and Joseph Bavis (I think). In both of these cases he had an accomplice, Joseph Collinge. One of these trials was on 27 May 1839 where he was prosecuted for shoplifting and sentenced to 7yrs transportation to Australia. I am trying to find clues to his birth, he was transported in 1840, so he won't be in the 1841 census. He said on his daughter’s birth record that he was born in Oldham, but so far I haven't been able to find him there. I hope someone can help. Thank You, Faye
