The 1881 census lists my g-g-grandparents, named above as living in Patchway Common with Henry employed as a Baker. They lived there with their two boys Albert Edward (my g-grandfather) and Arthur Reginald. I have looked high and low for Henrietta's maiden name, but have come up empty. She was born in 1857 or 8 in Redland, Gloucestershire. She died in 1897. If anyone can help, I'd be very grateful. James Henry dropped the THOMAS from his name & became known as BALL upon his arrival. He was the illegitimate son of James Henry BALL and Mary THOMAS, baptized on 11/6/1809. His father (1785 - 1847)later went on to marry Betty (Elizabeth?) HARRIS and had a family by her. James Henry BALL (THOMAS) had a total of 22 children - 12 from marriage to Ann PRICE and 10 by second wife, Catherine HANLEY. Most settled in South Australia and south-western Victoria.

SURMAN) in Gloucester in Aug 1816 and settled in Deerhurst/Apperley parishes. I am a descendant of William, brother to James (they had a double wedding), who started a 'dynasty' of blacksmiths in Northwood Green (Westbury on Severn) from about 1814 until 1900. My direct ancestor James migrated to New Zealand in 1878. His father and grandfather were both William and both married a BALDWIN woman.

Edward John Maccabe or Mccabe taught at Ashchurch in the 1870s. He was married to Elisabeth Milne who had six children from a previous marriage and one (another EJM) with Maccabe. Two further children were born here, Margaret Somerville Maccabe (later Wolstencroft) and Francis Joseph Maccabe (my grandfather, AKA Francis Joseph Milne and Francis Joseph Stuart Milne). EJM ended up in the Oldham workhouse, but I don't know why. Any information at all on this family would be welcome.

William Hawker was born at Ashchurch around 1795. He was baptised there on 27 September 1795, the son of Joseph Hawker and Ann Newman (who married at Ashleworth on 26 June 1794). In the 1851 & 1862 census William is living in Tewkesbury with Ann Lewis, who bore him two children: William Lewis (1846-1888) and Emma Lewis (born 1849), later known as Hawker. It wasn't until 18 November 1862 that Wm Hawker married Ann Lewis, by which time he was a widower. Presumably he had left his previous wife but was unable to marry until she died.

Grandmother was Lilly Ann Humphries Blick, born at Box House outside of Box or nearby Nailsworth. Her Mother was Ellen Humphries Blick. Her Father was Walter Blick. Uncle Dolf Humphries lived down the way at Rose Tree Cottage. ELlen had a sister named "MIN" Lilly Ann came here to the U.S. in 1908 with her Mother, Brother Arthur, sister Doris and Brother Maurice. Lilly Ann writes: "One of my earliest recollections is of a large old stone house at the edge of a village called "The Box" in the Cotswald Hills of Southern England. I, my two brothers and sister were born in this house. We were in a room with a stone floor, a stuffed fox on the mantel and a dim portrait of "the Lady Jane Grey" on an end wall... Anyone remembering, or knowing of this family...please contact me.
