red mail Rowland and Hall
I am trying to break down a massive brick wall in my quest to find information on my GGG grandmother Eleanor HALL. She emigrated to Sydney, Australia in 1850, under the surname ROWLAND, with her 13 yr old son Albert. On the shipping papers Albert is noted as born in Gloucester (1837), Eleanor as born in Mauritius (abt.1819). Albert's father is noted as Edward, but I can find no trace of a marriage for Edward and Eleanor. It looks like Eleanor's father was George HALL. Major Gage John HALL was Acting Governor of Mauritius at the time of Eleanor's birth, so maybe he is her father? I've found information on the Major's military career, but am at a loss when it comes to searching BDM info in Mauritius! Does anyone know of the HALLs in Mauritius, or where I can go to search? I am further hampered by Eleanor's apparent disapearance in Australia - no death record can be found. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have already found out (with some help) quite alot of info & am eager to contact any other descendents.

red mail Freemen of Gloucester
My uncle Ernest George Sproston NOKES was born in Gloucester in Sept 1894. He is reputed to have been made a Freeman of the borough on the day of his birth along with others born the same day. The family was poor so the title of Freeman would not have been earned, as is usual and in any even he was newborn. The Freemanship was supposedly given to commemorate some important event. Does anyone know if this is likely to be true?

Emily Edwards married Charles Booth in Bromyard, Herefordshire in 1873.They moved afterwards to Merthyr Tydfil (1881 census) and then to Brynmawr (now in Blaenau/Gwent-as in 1901 census).
