Photograph of Job Frederick Biggs
Job Frederick Biggs was born in Bristol in 1854. He was a commercial traveller in "Manchester Goods". He married twice. His first wife was Sarah Jane David from Cardff and his second Minnie Maria Lloyd. He lived all his married life in Cheltenham, in Leckhampton Road, then in London Road. He had no children with either wife. He died at Albert Road Cheltenham in 1934. Before his first marriage he had a relationship with Phoebe Eliza Sophia Bright and they had 2 children. My grandfather Frederick Biggs Bright in 1878 and his sister Ethel Winifred the following year We have no photograph of Job Frederick but would love to find one. His sister Matilda Jane married into the Bolt Family and I believe Job may have worked for the Bolt Brothers who had a Manchester Goods Warehouse in Bristol. Another half sister married into the James Family. His half brother William Ball Biggs had a very large family as well. It is possible his photo could exist among these family collections. He was also a Mason. Is anyone connected with any of these families?
Bannings of Cheltenham

Walter Sparrow/Parker & Mary Nolan - seeking son bn 1933
We are seeking information concerning the son of Mary & Walter, believed to be Joseph (surname could've been Nolan, Sparrow, possibly father's alias Parker). He was born late 1933 in London and his parents split up soon after his sister was bn 1934. She was taken into care, but despite much searching, we don't know what happened to Joe and his mother - possibly he was adopted? We have checked the 1939 Register inconclusively. If anyone has any other information, pls get in touch. Many thanks.

Augusta (Knowles) Elliott b 1855 d 1947
The October 06, 1947 issue of the Gloucestershire Echo has an article about probate being granted for "Mrs. Augusta Elliott, of The Myrtles, Slapton, near Kingsbridge, Devon, formerly of High-street, Cheltenham, who died on April 17 last". This newspaper article is the only information I have been able to find that describes her as a resident of Cheltenham. She may have resided there during the evacuation of the South Hams in WWII. All of the other information I have found about her is from Devon or from the USA. The National Probate calendar entry for 1947 lists her residence as The Myrtles, Slapton. I have located all of her census entries (and the 1939 National Registration) except for 1891, and I have a good deal of information about her travels back and forth between Slapton and the USA, but I'm trying to fill in some gaps in her timeline. I'd appreciate hearing about resources like electoral rolls or directories from Cheltenham that might place her in that area.

red mail julia smith
i am reseaching for a friend. She was apparently adopted so don't know if this is her real name. All we have is that she was born abt 1861,Sep.7 or 9 and she had many guardians. The first was Mrs. Silway of Silwood Lodge, Oakhill near Bath, Mr. Turner, Inspector of Police, Worcester County, Somerset, Mr. George Seys,Inspector of Police,Cheltenham,Gloucestershire, Mrs. Dury, Gloucester County who moved to Molvein County, Mrs.Carter Oakhill near Bath, Mrs. Jamison, Roman Road, Bridge or Bride St.,Islington, London(her husband may have been Alderman Fredrick Jamison) then finally a Miss Rye. Julia was very well educated and believed to have attended Cheltenham Ladies College until about the age of 18. She was then kidnapped and put on a boat heading for Boston, somehow she found her way to Niagara, Ontario Canada. She had been told that she would be told who her mother was but this never happened. If anyone could shed some light onto this story it would answer a lot of questions we have. Thanyou.
red mail Alfred F Davis 1836
Looking for info on great-great grandfather Alfred F Davis born February1836. He lived in Cheltenham and emigrated to US in 1850. Also looking for info on his parents, but don't have any info on them.
red mail Searching James Walwyn & Frederick Walwyn
I am researching the name WALWYN in Cheltenham. Frederick Walwyn 80th Foot Regiment stationed in Cambridge wrote to his brother James Little Bennett Walwyn 80th Foot Regiment stationed in Sydney NSW Australia a letter dated 11 Nov 1843. In it he mentions the names Edward and Eliza Walwyn, a farm at Charlton, the names William Skeldon Tom and charlie, Mr Moss the fishmonger and a new hotel built where the Imperial Pump Room stood. James was a draper in Cheltenham b Aug 1816 joined Reg 1836. James died at Agra India in June 1845, leaving a wife and baby daughter Isabella Jane travelling to join him at his camp. I have 6 letters from him to his wife Mary nee Douglas whom he married in Parramatta near Sydney 1 Jan 1842. These letters have been handed down to my father then to me. Isabella Jane was my great grandmother. As no one in the family had ever read them (very difficult as they are in palimpset), I have researched James' army records and Frederick's. No one knows if James' wife and daughter reached the camp. He died on 4 June 1845 and maybe it was of smallpox which he refers to in the last letter "as being amongst us and those who have not been cut will be cut tomorrow". My grandmother and great aunts never mentioned this fantastic story!
red mail Searching James Turner
James Turner was supposedly born in Cheltenham, (according to his marriage cert and census records).Going by his age on these documents he was born in late 1868 or sometime in 1869. His father was also James, and born in Cheltenham. James the younger is shown as a miner, and later as a "miner retired due to injury". James senior was listed as an excavator, deceased, on the marriage Cert. of James Turner and Rachel Barber. (James and Rachel married in Kingston, Surrey in 1891). Family history has many different ideas as to why we cannot track down James - he was a Jew disowned for marrying out of his faith, his surname was changed when he was young. Some famiy members remember being told he was in the army and went to India, he was injured in the Blackwall Tunnel, he had a brother, whereabouts and name unknown, his mother died when he was young and father remarried, possibly to a Frenchwoman. I have been able to track James from the date of his marriage, but nothing before. His wife, Rachel Barber, was born in Topcroft, Norfolk. After 6-7 years of marriage,James and Rachel were living in Topcroft, where they lived until emigrating to Australia and shortly after, to New Zealand. Does anyone have my James on their tree? If so, I would love to hear from you.
red mail Robert Howse/Howes 1818-1877
Looking for parents of Robert Howse born Winchcombe or cheltenham abt 1818 His marriage certificate to Eliza Poulton in Wolverhampton 1841 gives his fathers name as John Howse, Butcher. All married life spent in Wolverhampton with birth place given as 1841'not Staffs' ,1851 and 1861 Winchcombe,1871 Cheltenham. He died in Wolverhampton 1877. Name variously spelt as Howse/Howes/House/Hows. Any information welcome
red mail Margaret Marsden nee Hastings
Looking for any information on a Margaret Marsden nee Hastings, born 1909 (or thereabouts). Margaret married William Arthur Marsden on 02 Oct 1935 in Wandsworth (London), she was a Lady's Maid and was living in Putney at the time. Her father was George Hastings and his profession was a Hairdresser at the time of the marriage. Her husband William (born 29 July 1910, Dartford, England) was a Refrigeration Engineer and living in Fulham (London), his Father's name was Charles Henry Marsden, who was a Business Manager. I believe William served in the RAF in WW2 and Margaret worked as a civilian clerk at RAF Records Barnwood (Cheltenham). They were living at the end of the war in Zoons Road, Hucclecote, Cheltenham, England. After May 1945, Margaret may have lived in (or stayed with relatives in) Eastbourne (East Sussex England), but I have no other evidence thereafter. It would appear that William remarried in Apr-Jun 1947 Phyllis Lilian Burgess, again in Wandsworth (London) and became a Brewery Chief Engineer before he then died in Rainhill (Merseyside) 13 Apr 1998 and Phyllis died in the Stockport (Greater Manchester) district in Dec 2004. Any information on Margaret after May 1945 would be much appreciated. Thank you

red mail William & Sarah Heskins Hooper

red mail William Cook, Carpenter
This is a new update on my earlier entry concerning my 3rd great grandfather William Cook. Having searched for his family for some time, I now think he was born in Newent, as shown on the 1851 census, father John Cook, and mother Anne. Subsequent Census and baptism records clearly show William married to Hannah, although I wonder if she could also have been known simply as Anne. I have now come to the conclusion that William married Hannah Woolley on 26th April 1828 in Elmstone Hardwick. Harper's Cheltenham Directory and Guide of 1844 shows a Carpenter's business of William Cook at 10 Union Street, Cheltenham. The 1841 census for William and Hannah Cook shows Agnes, Emela and Theofore - all as daughters. Later research shows that Emela and Theofore to have been simple mis-spellings. Theofore was not a daughter but a son, Theophilus; and Emela was clearly Emily. The 1851 and 1861 census records show a William Cook, Carpenter, at 10 Union Street. Theophilus's marriage certificate of 1863 shows his residence at the time of his marriage as 10 Union Street, his occupation as a Carpenter, and his father as William Cook, Carpenter. These facts give a continuous timeline from 1844 to 1863 of William Cook, Carpenter living, and working, from 10 Union Street. BMD records show a William Cook dying in Cheltenham in 1871 aged 75. I seek help with William's mother, Elizabeth and her family, and William's wife, Hannah and her family.
red mail BUCHANAN Elizabeth
1851 and 1861 Cheltenham Censuses show Elizabeth Buchanan nee Stewart with husband George in 1851 then as a widow in 1861. What happened to this family?
red mail Elizabeth Fisher died 1879 in Cheltenham
Elizabeth (nee Read) was the widow of Henry Fisher whom she married in London 1840. Before that she was the wife of John Feast whom she married in London in 1827; their surviving child was William Feast, a bookbinder who was born London 1836, and lived in Cheltenham and Charlton Kings c.1851-1864. I have no certain record of Elizabeth Fisher in Cheltenham until the 1871 census, living at 12 Whitcombe Place where she died 1879. I am searching for any other information about her life in Cheltenham. She was living in London in the 1841 census, with her husband Henry Fisher and son William. I have not with certainty found her in the 1851 and 1861 censuses anywhere in England -- although 1851 she could have been the 42 y.o. nurse at the Boys House School (RG10/2663, fo.52, p.22).

My paternal great grandfather JOB FREDERICK BIGGS was born in Bristol in 1854. He was a commercial traveller in drapery and linen. He moved to Cheltenham soon after the marriage to his first wife Sarah Jane David in 1890 and they lived at Merton Lodge/House on Leckhampton Road close to the station. SaRah Jane died in 1925 and later that year he married for a second time to a widow Minnie Maria Lloyd. By then they were living at 'Wyesham' on London Road. Minnie died in 1932. Job died in December 1934 aged 80. I dont think that he and his wives had any children. (My grandfather, born in 1878, and his sister in 1879, were the children of Job Frederick and Phoebe Bright and all used the name Biggs after 1890. I can find Job Frederick in the census 1891 and 1901 census, and have obtained the relevent certificates, but would like to know a bit more about the lives they led in Cheltenham at the turn of the century. red mail Wakefield.
Looking for information on a man, surname of Wakefield. This is real needle in a haystack story. All I know about him is he was a custodian at Cheltenham council possibly in the late 1920's plus. He was married but he and his wife had no children. They had a niece who they regarded as a daughter and sent her to Cheltenham ladies college. I do believe they were fairly well off and believe they did have servant's too. If anyone knows anything no matter how small please get in touch.
