John Bellis/Maria Catherall
Seeking info on Maria Catherall of Flintshire. John and Maria married on 28 November 1831 in St. Mary's church, Chester, England. The 1841 census has them in Moor living with Thomas Bellis, John's father and with one child Mary. Other Catheralls are their neighbors. The 1851 census shows John and Maria still in Moor with two children, Mary Ann & John. While I have their marriage info and the baptism record for John Bellis, I cannot find Maria Catherall's birth or baptism or any other relatives. The Catherall neighbors in the 1841 census are the closest I have come to find, but still no Maria. A Maria and a Mary in the same family doesn't appear to be correct (???). The marriage record lists Ann Catherall as a witness so one assumption is that Maria and Ann are sisters. Catherall is spelled and/or transcribed in any number of variations. Any assistance finding Maria Catherall would be appreciated. Update with more details: I am left with three possibilities: 1. Maria was not baptized - unlikely, but the first two children of Samuel Catherall & Elizabeth Williams were born in Bistree, before they moved to Moor. Based on the birth/baptism dates for the first two and third child there is a possibility of another child being born between them - 1808? The "Other" Catheralls noted in my original post and found in the 1841 census are Samuel & Elizabeth Catherall. They are in the correct age range to be Maria's parents and they are neighbors of John/Maria (also see below regarding marriage witness) 2. Maria was baptized in a Methodist chapel - these records are not accessible online. 3. Maria was baptized in another parish. John Bellis and Maria Catherall were married at St. Mary's on the Hill, Chester, and were both described as being of "This Parish". This then begs the question, why did Maria state she was born in Hawarden in the various census returns? I have not brute forced my way through the St. Mary on the Hill register. It is very difficult to read, plus there are multiple instances of many pages which makes it even more difficult. The baptism record for the Catheral, Catherall, Cathrall, Catrel, Cotrell, Cottrell, Cottrall and Cotterell families in the Hawarden register from 1785 to 1815 have been reviewed. I was trying to identify the Ann Catherall who was a witness to the marriage of John Bellis & Maria Catherall. I only found one possibility for the latter, which is Ann Catherall, baptized in 1805, daughter of Samuel Catherall & Elizabeth Williams - but still no Maria to be found. Note that the other witness to John/Maria's marriage was George Williams, but sadly I can't find him yet. Further note that the witnesses to the next generation's marriage on 28 October 1867 between John Bellis (b 1842) & Margaret Thompson were Mary Ann Williams and Edward Williams. (John Bellis 1842 was the son of John Bellis/Maria Catherall).
