red mail The Greenfield Tragedy
John Arthur Jones was born in Holywell during 1884 and lived in Pen-y-Ball Street, Holywell. His parents were Benjamin Jones, who was employed as a Coal Miner and Abigail Jones. He had three sisters - Margaret Ann Jones, Sarah Ellen Jones and Edith Jones and one brother, Charles Jones. Little is known of his early life, but in 1904 he married Sarah Catherine Dyson and they lived in Wood Houses, Greenfield, Flintshire. The 1911 Census tells us that the head of the family was John Arthur Jones, aged 27, who was employed as a General Labourer. His wife, Sarah Catherine Jones, aged 25 and their three children - Margaret E Jones, aged 6, John E Jones, aged 5 and Bennie Jones, aged 2 years. At the outbreak of the First World War John enlisted as a Private with 5th Battalion Royal Welsh Fusiliers. During September 1915, whilst on home leave from the Regiment, both he and his wife, Sarah Catherine, were found dead in the house. They had both committed suicide, she had taken poison and he had cut his throat. The inquest was held on Thursday 14 October 1915 at the Court House, Holywell, Flintshire, before Mr. F Llewellyn-Jones, County Coroner. The verdict of the jury was suicide whilst temporarily insane. The full transcript of the incident can be found in The Flintshire Observer Newspaper, dated 14 October 1915, headed 'The Greenfield Tragedy.' John is buried near the North side of St. Peter's Churchyard, Holywell. He is also remembered on the North Wales Heroes Memorial Arch, Deiniol Road, Bangor, Gwynedd, North Wales.
Evans family from Trevor
My Nain Elizabeth Carrington (Evans) was born in Trevor, Mostyn (Where the Knitmesh factory is now)in 1900. I am searching for her sister Ethel Evans born in Liscard, Cheshire in 1888. She ran away from home as a teenager and became an actress and went by the name Ethel May. Whenever the family talked about her the 'Actress' part was always in a whisper followed by "You know what I mean?" She reappered in the 1930's with red or blond hair, silk stockings and can you beleive it? Smoking. She later married a Jack Harcourt and they had a son Claude T Harcourt who with his wife did Panto in South Shields. Sadly he died with the Paras in the Normandy operation. I know she died in Norfolk in 1974, but what happened between? If anyone has any information I would deeply appreciate it. Also I would like to share memories with anyone who grew up in Greenfield in the late 1950's to 1972 when I emigrated. In those days I went by the name Shaun Parry, my brother was Dennis, and my parents Thomas Gilbert and Marian Parry. I lived in Station Road, Tan-y-Bryn and the Close.
