red mail Rowan/Rolland
This family is recorded in or near Saline from the early 16th century - owning at one time the estates of Boreland, Sheardrum, Burnside, Bankhead, Craighouse, Drumkepie, Upper Kinnedder and Bandrum. Does anyone know where the estate of Boreland would have been? I am unable to locate it on any maps. The Rolland family of Gask originated with a (presumably younger) son of the Rolland who lived at Boreland. The oldest son would have inherited the estate lands and the younger son(s) would have either gone into the military, the ministry, engaged in a trade, or married daughters of landowners with no surviving sons. Until the late 17th century, the name was spelled Rowan and was changed to Rolland about 1690.
