red mail Robert FARMER & Jean RIDDEL
Researching Robert FARMER, miller at Strathendry Mills, Leslie circa 1770 and his wife Jean RIDDEL (or RIDDELL). Children: James 1770-? , Robert 1771-1833, David 1780-1854, Janet 1783-?. I have a lot of information I can share on sons Robert & David. Has anyone managed to identify reliable sources for birth, marriage or deaths for Robert Farmer & Jean Riddel - or any additional children?
red mail Surname Farmer
I am looking for a Robert Farmer who was born in Leslie Fife in 1809. In fact there were two Robert Farmers born in 1809. 1. 10 10 1809 Father Robert Mother Cecilia nee Greig. 2. 31 10 1809 Father David Mother Ann nee Alexander. One of the above went to France and then returned to appear on the 1851 census at Rattray Perthshire with wife Ann and children David,10, Andrew,6, and Paul, 4, all born in France. I think that Paul above is the great grandfather of my wife but I am not sure which Robert Farmer born in 1809 it is. Can anyone help?
red mail Gow/Pye
We are looking for further info about Andrew Gow who had a child, David, by Janet Pye. David was born in Leslie in 1836 and baptised in 1848. Janet died unmarried. She was a flax worker. We are trying to find the correct Andrew Gow. He may have been a flax worker too or he may have been a merchant seaman. David took the name Gow and established a business in Edinburgh.
red mail Thomas Speed Mitchell
Looking for family background in Fife and Lothians,Thomas was born 1897 or thereabouts in Leslie.
red mail Dalrymple, Robert and John
According to several family records, my paternal great grandfather Robert came from Leslie. He emigrated to Canada in 1814; the engraving on the family gravestone in Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal, says he died in 1875 at the age of 86, putting his birth year around 1789. I have not yet been able to find his parents. The marriage certificate of his son John states that Robert was from Lesley (sic), Fifeshire. One couple, John Dalrymple and Jean Will of Leslie, is a possibility, but their son Robert is said to have been born in 1794. Robert's brother John emigrated to Canada as well, and founded a second branch of the family there. He and Robert bought the family plot in Mount Royal, and John died in 1869. Family oral history had 7 brothers emigrating at the same time, with some going to the US as opposed to Canada, but neither my late father nor I have so far been able to find anything tying this down as fact.
