red mail ARTHUR J BROCKLEHURST born 1855/56
While researching my Brocklehurst ancestors (principally the Hull branch) I came across an ARTHUR J BROCKLEHURST, born 1855 or 1856 in Sydenham, Kent (London), who was a grocer in PRITTLEWELL in 1891 and LEYTON in 1901. He is clearly connected with my ancestors but I haven't discovered who his parents were and I would very much like to know. Two of his aunts were sisters of my great-great grandfather but I can't confirm that he was a son of any of their many siblings. Arthur J may have been orphaned at age 5 because he turned up in 1861 at his aunt Sarah Shilton Brown (nee Brocklehurst)'s farm in Farleigh Wallop, Hampshire; in 1871 aged 15 he was a "grocer's improver" lodging in St Pancras, London; in 1878 he married EMMA MARIA LEE JARMAN (born 1852 near Crediton, Devon) in NEWTON ABBOT and they had a daughter GERTRUDE MABEL BROCKLEHURST, born 1879 in MILLBROOK or St German's, Cornwall; Emma Maria died during or soon after the birth of Gertrude and the widowed Arthur J turned up with his baby daughter at another aunt's, Mary Ann Hoult (nee Brocklehurst) in WALTHAMSTOW; the Hoults adopted Gertrude and she was still living with them in Herne Bay in 1901, aged 21. Things then got better for Arthur J and he married ELIZABETH ALICE THOMPSON (born c1861 in Islington)in 1889 in Hackney; they moved to PRITTLEWELL where Arthur J was a grocery manager by 1891 and had three children - Cyril Varney Brocklehurst b1890, Margherita Brocklehurst b1892 and Ernest Joseph Brocklehurst b1895, all three births registered in ROCHFORD. In 1901 they were all living in LEYTON, Essex, still in the grocery business, together with Elizabeth Alice's sister Caroline, her husband Alfred Ashby (butcher's assistant) and their daughters Kathleen, Winifred and Evelyn. And that's the last I know of them.
