red mail McBean of Tyninghame & Haddington from Inverness-shire
I would be interested to hear from anyone who connects with the McBean family of Haddington / Tyninghame in East Lothian, thought to be from Nairn c.1720/30s. The first one there of our family was Daniel McBean (or McBain) of Tyninghame who married Jane Thomson (or Thompson), daughter of Alexander Thomson a servant to Lord Belhaven. His son John McBean was a brewer in Haddington born 1780 (christened at Whitekirk 18th July 1780). He had a brother Alexander born 1767. Daniel is said to have hailed from Inverness and moved to East Lothian after Culloden. He is believed to be Daniel McBean born 7th Oct 1729 in or near Nairn, son of William McBean. John McBean the brewer (prev farmer) died in a driving accident with Thomas, Earl of Haddington, a brother officer in the Berwickshire Militia. He had married Catherine Matthew daughter of Andrew Matthew of Haddington and his wife Catherine Newton (whose parents were Andrew Newton and Catherine Shiells). John had two sons: Alexander and Thomas (named after his godfather Thomas Hamilton, Earl of Haddington. Alexander was said to have gone and studied medicine, and then migrated to north America never to be heard of again. We'd love to hear from his descendants if any exist. Thomas went and joined the Scots Greys and took part in the charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava. He had many children and died in Birmingham, leaving his family living in the midlands rather than returning to Scotland - his son Alexander at "Tyninghame" in Tettenhall, Wolverhampton and Thomas at Hallow Park, Worcestershire. Daniel McBean of Nairn had two brothers: William McBean born 5th Feb 1725 at Nairn and Alexander McBean born Sept 1733. What we do not know is who Daniel's father William was. If anyone is able to shed any light on this or is connected with the McBeans of Haddington, do get in touch.
