red mail Downey - (Pennywell - Durham)
Looking for information or the descendants of Kathleen Downey. Kathleens parents were Patrick (John) Downey b 14th January 1872 in the Parish of St Johns, Limerick, Ireland. Patricks wife was Bridget Norton born about 1872 in Ireland. They married in 1895 in Massachusetts; USA They lived in Boston City, Suffolk, Massachusetts. The children born in Massachusetts were Catherine 1895, William 1898, Martin 1901 & Mary 1906. Patrick & Bridget show on the 1900 & 1910 census results. Also on both census returns is Winifred Norton, Bridgets mother. The next records we have of Patrick are when he joined the Military in 1914. Patricks records show that his dependants were Winifred Norton his mother-in-law and Kathleen (this may be another child or Catherine 1895. Patrick has spelt it Kathleen in his Army application) his daughter he states here that he is a widow. The residential address is given as 36 PENNYWELL, LIMERICK. I do not know what happened to Bridget and the other children born in Massachusetts. Patricks 1914 WW1 pension record shows that he was serving in the CORK RGA REGIMENT NO 614. The 4th May 1916 to 12 May 1918 Patrick served in Malta. Here his dependants in 1918 changed to Ellen Constance Cherrett and daughter Phyllis. On the 31st May 1918 Patrick was sent to India and came back 3rd June 1919. On the 21st September 1919 Patrick married Ellen Cherrett (Nell) and the residential address was then, Poole Hill, Bournemouth, Hampshire, England. Patrick was medically discharged from the army 29th November 1919 and died in 1928 in Southampton. Patrick died in 1928. Patrick and Ellen had six children. Phyllis 1917 2000 (my birth mother died in Canada). John Patrick 1918 1924 died in the Diphtheria hospital, London. Mary H C 1920 2005. Alys Dorothy 1923. John 1925 1955. Betty 1924 went to Canada and died there. After Patrick died Ellen married again, Eli Joe Ernest Toms in 1929 and had three more children. None of Patricks first children were brought up with the Toms family yet they would have been very small at the time (Phyllis 12, Mary 9, Alys Dorothy 6 and John 4 four years old) so who brought up these children? The only person I can not account for is Kathleen. They all grew up knowing each other and were in contact with each other through adulthood. They also visited Ellen from time to time.

Ellen (or Margaret) TOOMY or TOOMEY or TWOMEY, c1818-20 - (Philadelphia - County Durham)
Ellen Toomy arrived in Australia on a ship called the Bodicea that left England on 2 Oct 1835 and arrived in Hobart on 2 Feb 1836 as part of a migrant bounty scheme. There was controversy at the time as the bounty scheme was supposed to be bringing young women to the colony but on arrival many of the "women" were found to be very young girls. It appears that on arrival Ellen went to work for a widower and former convict named John Grimes and eventually entered a relationship with him although it is not certain they formally married. On the 1848 birth record of her son William Grimes her surname is spelled Twomey, but as Ellen appears to have been illiterate this is probably just an error. On the 1857 birth record of her son Edward Grimes the birthplace for Ellen is listed as Philadelphia, United States of America (written in full) and her name is given as Margaret Toomey. Her age is shown as 37 suggesting a birth date of 1819/20. On her 1872 death record Ellen's age is given as 53 suggesting a birth date of 1818/19 with the place give simply as Philadelphia with no further location details. Her father's name is given as Allan with no name for her mother and the informant was John Grimes. It states she had been in the colony for 26 years which aligns with an arrival in 1836. The records for her other children do not include age or birth place details. The date range of 1818-20 suggests she would have been around 16-18 when the Bodicea arrived in 1836. As many of the girls on the Boadicea were underage it is possible Ellen's age has been overstated and she may have actually been younger than that. Any assistance with Ellen's origins appreciated. (NOTE: It has been suggested to us that she may have come from Philadelphia in County Durham and this would make more sense in relation to arriving on the Bodicea than Philadelphia USA. However, we have obtained the shipping records for the Boadicea and she is shown as Irish.)

red mail Searching for Joseph Carr born 1870 - (Stella - County Durham)
I am trying to locate my Great Grandfather, Joseph Carr, and family. I have a baptism record for 14th August 1870 at St. Cuthberts, Stella. Sadly the GRO have no record of the birth being registered. At the time of his birth his family consisted of William Carr (father), Margaret (mother) and sisters Catherine Ann and Margaret, who were all born in Ireland and Martha who was born in Durham so they must have come over between Margaret's birth in 1864 and Martha's in 1868. 1871 Census then has them living in Turret Place, Winlaton. I am anxious to confirm parentage so I can focus on them in Northern Ireland, assuming I have the correct couple.. I have records of census etc from 1871 in Britain.
