I am trying to locate Alexander Douglass, who was last spotted aged 9 living with his widowed mother in Westgate 1861. Born in Berwick-upon-Tweed 1851 he much later migrated to Australia about 1883. Where was he on census for 1871 and 1881 before he appeared in Australia? Any help or suggetions would be most appreciated.

William and Sarah (nee Kipling) Shepherd were living at 12 William Street, Westgate, at the time of the 1881 Census. William's birthplace is listed as Vedo Inion, B Subject, his occupation a Paper Ruler aged 46. His wife Sarah was 46 and born in Barnard Castle in Durham. They had the following children: Ann aged 20, Jane aged 17, William aged 15, Thomas aged 13, Joseph aged 10 and John aged 3.
