red mail Mary Taylor & Catherine Mary
I have been researching my grandfather Thomas Taylor's ancestors and have found his aunt Mary O'brien, possibly spelt O'brian (nee Taylor), living with her mother Catherine Taylor, her siblings, William,James (my great-grandfather),John and Emily ( probably married to a Job Jones), her sister-in-law Ruth Taylor, and a niece Ann Jones. On the 1871 Census for Auckland district they are all shown as residing at the Bridge Inn, Whitworth (Spennymoor) where Mary's mother is described as widowed and an Innkeeper. Mary O'brien's daughter, Catherine Mary O'brien aged 7 is also in the household. I have the transcript of a letter written to my mother during the 1980's by an elderly Taylor relative, describing the death of her 'cousin Winnie' during the 1960's - "...She had only one relative, the son of the much talked of Kathleen O'brien...". My relative, who wrote that, was Muriel Taylor, my mother's cousin. I have been trying to take the O'brien family forward from 1871 but cannot find where they went as they are not on the 1881 census for that address. I think Mary Taylor married a Robert Carlisle O'brien , with their marriage registered March 1863 in Auckland district, Co. Durham. I have been unable to find his birth or death registration as yet. If anyone thinks they are researching the same ancestors, or has some more information about them, I would be glad to have a message. Thank you.

red mail Mary Jane Carr born County Durham area
Seeking information on my great grandmother, 'Mary Jane Carr' who married Robert Elliott in Esh (County Durham) 1892, when her age was recorded as 25. Her occupation was 'household servant', and her father's 'Thomas Carr' as miner. I am unable to pinpoint her birth year due to different ages recorded in the census returns, although in 1891 she was 24 (which matched her marriage certificate). At this time her birthplace was Spennymoor (County Durham), and in 1881 a Mary J Carr was also recorded as a 'servant' born in Spennymoor, but claiming to be 18. The date range for her birth is therefore 1863 to 1867, but I have already bought 3 of the likeliest certificates in order to find her mother's name, without success.
