red mail Carruthers 5th laird of Homains - (Carrutherstown - Dumfriesshire)
I have traced my Caruthers ancestors from their arrival in America from Scotland and eventual migration out west. My lineage is connected to the 5th. laird of Holmains to a James Carruthers in the year 1494 - 1580, in Dumfries, Scotland. I know of their occupancy in Comlongon castle when Roger De Carruthers was given the charter to guard the territories in the 15th century. I am looking for information for the name of the ship port and the name of the ship that the Carruthers descendants later took from Scotland to Ireland to reach the Ulster Plantations after 1631. One James Carruthers and his wife went from Scotland to Northern Ireland. The first James Carruthers to Ireland born in 1718, and died in Ireland. His son James Caruthers ( my ancestor ) was born August 4, 1746 in Letterkenny, Donegal, Ireland, and died in Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, USA. The 4 children of James Carruthers born in 1746 were: Sarah, John, James, and Andrew ( James and Andrew were twins, and this twin James is my ancestral lineage ). Their father was James and he moved his family to the north of Ireland due to unsettled condition in Scotland. When the 4 children left from Ireland and arrived in America, they were met by their uncle John who came to America in 1745. The 4 children settled first in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in 1765. Andrew married Margaret Neely in 1765. James, the twin brother married Nancy Neely. James Carothers married his second wife Nancy Neely, in 1767 in Adams County, Pennsylvania. They lived on the Juniata River, near Mount Union, Huntingdon County, Pennsylvania, on a farm called the loop. James Carothers born 1746 was in the French and Indian wars, and fought bravely in the Colonial 5th Pennsylvania Regimental Army as a private. He was in General Armstrong’s command at the battle of kittanning point. Uncle John Carruthers, was born about 1726 of Over Denbie, Dumfries, Scotland, and came to America in 1745 to Pennsylvania. Their Uncle John was the first to come to America by way of Northern Ireland. This Uncle was wounded during Pontiac’s revolt, along with William and his brother Hugh Carruthers in the Colonial wars. Uncle John, William, and Hugh who came up from Virginia and North Carolina later took the children Andrew and John back to North Carolina. After coming to America, those staying in Pennsylvania changed the spelling of their name to Carothers, through the influence of a school teacher who lived in the family and taught the children. The two who went to North Carolina at an early day, Robert and John spelled their name Caruthers, dropping one “r”. If anybody has information on this lineage in Scotland, then let me know. Thank you.

red mail Holywood 1793 - (Holywood - Dumfriesshire)
From Old Statistical Account for Scotland 2 Holywood From materials furnsihed by Rev Dr Bryce Johnston, Minister of the Parish. p 26 State of the Poor; The average number of poor who now receive alms is 15. Theannual sum expended for their relief is about £32 produced by the collections in the church on Sundays, excepting the interest of a small sum appropriated to them. These 15 persons are all maintained in their own houses or boarded out in other families none of them are kept in hospitals or work-houses. Besides the relief from the parish, the poor receive frequent supplies of food and clothes from charitable and well-disposed people. They are however, kept from begging from door to door most effectually, by the assurance of their inevitably losing all parish relief if they persist in the practice. As the church session is extremely attentive to give them relief, according to their necessities, to provide medical assistance for them when sick, to pay the schoolmaster for teaching their children reading, writing, and the common rules of arithmetic, their own interest induces them...

The name SOMERVILLE/SOMMERVILLE doesn't crop up in any other documents either. If anyone has any information about either James Gill I'd appreciate you getting in touch.

red mail John Little married Helen Park - (Westerkirk - Dumfriesshire)
I am a decendant of John Little who married Helen Park in 1785 in Westerkirk, Dumfriesshire, Scotland. John was born around 1760 and died in 1829. Helen was born around 1764. Andrew (born 1789 in Westerkirk), son of John, married Betsey (Elizabeth) Irving on 3 November 1835. Andrew and Betsey arrived in Sydney on 23 January 1841 in the ship "Superb" from Liverpool. Some of Andrews other brothers and Sisters also arrived in Sydney at various times. Andrew settled in Bathurst NSW Australia. I understand that one of Andrews Great Great Granbaughters holds 30 original letters brought to Aust by Andrew, some mentioning Duncan Malcolm in Berhanpore India, Sir Charles Malcolm and Sir Putteney Malcolm who appeared to be good friends of the little family. Andrew little was enticed to Bathurst by his brother-in-law David Maxwell Irving who had migrated from Langholm two years (?) before. Andrew bought 100 acres of land in Bathurst and built a house in 1850 (which is still standing and is classified by the National Trust). Various brothers and sisters followed Andrew to Australia later. The Bathurst property was called "Bimbenang" and was handed down through Andrew's son George little to grandson MacDonel little (my great uncle) and was sold out of the family in 1967 when MacDonel died. The letters I hold were found in good condition in a shed on the property by my father who was clearing the house out before putting it up for sale. I would be interested in contacting MacDonel's Great Niece and obtaining a copy of the original letters, and or any one who is researching the Little family in Scotland or Australia.
