My great grandmother Susan MARSHALL nee McBRIDE give her place of birth on the 1851 Census as Sanquhar about 1828, I can't find her on any previous Census and I don't know who her parents were. Susan was living with her husband William MARSHALL and two children at Muirkirk on the 1851 Census they left for South Australia in 1852. South Australian Death Certificate do not require information about parents unless it's a child, hence no further information about Susan. Can anyone help me. I'm not having any luck either with William MARSHALL supposed to have been born at Bathgate, Linlithgow about 1825/27. Cheers, Sue.

My 4g grandmother Lilias McClelland was born to William McClelland and Margaret Chessnut (sometimes recorded as Margaret Chesney or Chesnay) in Sanquhar 28/07/1799. Jean McClelland b. 06/09/1796 to William McClelland, also in Sanquhar, was probably her sister. Older siblings Janet (1787), Elizabeth (1789) and Hugh (1790) were born in Minnigaff, Kirkcudbright; the younger ones, Agnes (1801) and John (1803), were born in Muirkirk, Ayshire. Lilias married James McCartney 10/12/1819 in Old Cumnock; the couple then settled in Muirkirk where most of their 11 children were born. Can anyone tell me more about these families? I would be interested to hear from anyone else researching them.

red mail Reid, Agnes
She was possibly the daughter of Grace Reid, born in 1849/50. Is there a birth registry for Sanquhar for that time? Her mother later married Peter G. Laurie who probably adopted Agnes. Agnes married William Aldous--they had 3 sons one of who was my grandfather. I would love to find proof of Agnes' birth.

red mail Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire
Tom Wilson's "Annals of Sanquhar" states on page 185 that John Barrie was a dyer (early 1700's??) and opened his home to Jacobites which rendered him a bit of trouble, but he was able to circumvent it. It additionally mentions his son RobertBarrie (surgeon with the 31st Regiment of Foot). I have been unable to find any information about John Barrie, and I don't have this book for reference. Would like to know where I can locate more on John Barrie, father of Dr. Robert Barrie, and grandfather of Sir Robert Barrie who died in 1841.
red mail Wilsons/browns In Sanquhar
My own ancestor, Archibald WILSON lived in Sanquhar and worked as a mail driver in the time span 1835-1850. One puzzle is what happened to Archibald as the next sign of the family is when his widow Elizabeth BROWN appears in Cambusnethan in 1859 (when she died). I have found no trace of any of them in 1851 or 1861. I believe that there may be connections via the name BROWN to Kirkconnell, close to Sanquhar.
