Thomas Sullivan - (Mayobridge - County Down)
I am researching my great-grandfather Thomas Sullivan, a policeman in the RIC who was posted to Mayobridge on 1 December 1843. On 12 April 1852 Thomas Sullivan, perhaps encouraged by a recent promotion, married Eliza Ann Gilmore of Co. Down, then aged 37 or 38, five years older than her husband. In 1853 they had a daughter, Mary, christened on 11 September; her godparents were Patrick Gilmore (no doubt a relation, probably a brother, of Elizas) and Mary Kavanagh (probably the wife or daughter of Matthew Cavanagh, shortly to become policeman in charge of the Rathfriland station, the chief station of the South Down police district. In 1854 the station within Mayobridge proper was closed, and he was moved across the village to a new station in Bavan townland on the south-eastern side of the river. His son Patrick Joseph was born on 27 August 1855, and baptised at the church in Warrenpoint; the godparents were James McConville, a successful small landowner from a prolific family active in the local Catholic church, and Margaret Gilmore (again no doubt a relation of Elizas). Fr Hugh Mooney was appointed resident curate in Mayobridge in 1859, residing in the old Church of Ireland Vicarage located on the main Newry road on the edge of the village; on 15 August 1859 Dr. Leahy, the co-adjutor bishop of the diocese, blessed the foundation stone of a new Catholic church to replace the existing, more primitive Mass House put up in 1806 (parts of which are still visible in the disused Parochial Hall); and a curate was appointed to live in Mayobridge. In 1857 Thomas Sullivans police station in the Bavan townland was closed again and a Mayobridge station reopened at some time between 1858 and 1865, and he remained in charge there until at least 1868. In early 1868 there was a fire at which Thomas and three other policemen were responsible for saving a large amount of property; each received a cash reward from the the Belfast Fire Insurance Company. On 1 July 1868, at the age of 50, Thomas Sullivan was promoted once more, to Head Constable (Second Class), the equivalent of an Inspector or Chief Inspector in todays police forces. His place at Mayobridge was taken by John Rodgers, and he was posted to the Slane district in Co. Meath. Any further light which can be shed on Thomas Sullivan, the Gilmores or their contacts would be welcomed.

Also the marriage and baptisms of their parents David Moore Agricultural labourer around 1813 Down or Antrim and mother Mary nee Helley. Robert Moore was married to Mary Hewison at Stockton Co Durham on 18 May 1872. The marriage certificate gives Roberts birthplace as Mount Stewart Co. Down Ireland 1843, and his father as David a farm labourer. The marriage was witnessed by James Moore who is his cousin. However, Robert also witnessed James' marriage to Elizabeth Simpson (born Co. Antrim Ireland) in Partick Glasgow on 11 May 1863. On his marriage certificate, James born 1840 Co. Antrim N.Ireland gives his father as James Moore (1) Boot & Shoe Maker and his mother as Jane Nelson (Neilson?). The family moved from the Marquis of Londonderry's estate at Mount Stewart to his estate at Wynyard Park County Durham in 1849, but were orphaned by the death of father David in 1852 and mother Mary. James Moore (born 1848) was thought to have emigrated from County Durham to the USA some time after 1863, perhaps with his brother David. James Moore 1840, his wife Elizabeth and some of their children have been located in the Irish census of both 1901 and 1911 in living in Belfast Co. Down. According to the 1871 census, James Moore 1840 and Elizabeth were in Stockton Co Durham, and in the 1881 census in Lochryan Place Govan Glasgow close to Elizabeth's family, the Simpsons. James 1840 and Elizabeth had a son James 1863 born Partick Glasgow, who later moved to Barrow in Furness Lancashire and had a large family. One of James' 1863 sons David, was active on It has also been impossible so far, to trace the birth, death and marriage of James Moore's (born 1840) father James, or mother Jane Nelson.
