My GGG Grandfather was JAMES JOHNSTONE-.BORN 1776 COMBER CO DOWN IRELAND- He was tried in Antrim in March 1818 - Sentence was LIFE for" HORSE STEALING'- The Ship he was MARTHA left Cork with 170 convicts arrived 128 days later on 24th December 1818 in NSW the captain of the ship was John Apsey.- He was a Soldier Shoemaker at the time of his sentence he is described as 5'11'' fair/sallow complexion, silvery hair, hazel eyes. The family of James Johnstone convict –In 1821he applied to have his of 3 children and wife Sarah of Upper Langfield near Omagh Co Tyrone sent out at Government expense. The Records of the male Orphanage show Irvine Johnstone 8 (my GG Grandfather) his brother James 12 admitted 27 July 1825 states the children of Sarah Johnstone laundress Parramatta she had a daughter Ann. The 1828 Census show James Snr was at the time at Hyde Park Barracks ,Sarah 48 was a servant Thomas Clarkson in Princess St; James 16 was an apprentice to Edward Lack in Elizabeth St and Irvine still in the Orphanage Ann was with her mother.

JOhn Devine R C (35) & Margaret Jess Presbyterian (30)of Comber County Down immigrated to Australia on the "broom" . arriving 13 feb 1842 with 5 children William, George, Flora, Maryanne ,& Sussannah. John's parents were Edward & Phoebe Devine & Margarett's John & Ellen Jess. Does anyone have any info on these ??? An earlier attempt to immigrate says they were from Ballymaccarrett.
