red mail WEBBER - Abbotskerswell, Devon - (Abbotskerswell - Devon)
My GGG-grandfather was Thomas WEBBER, born 1799 Abbotskerswell (or possibly Exeter). I have nothing at all on his family there. He was a ploughman or similar, and was sent to Sydney NSW Australia as a convict in 1822. Exeter is mentioned as his "native place" in only one document of his convict records; others say Abbotskerswell. He married (1)Mary OXLEY 1827 Parramatta;she died 1834;(2) Elizabeth (Jane?) SMITH (also a convict) 1835 Liverpool NSW. They had 8 children. Thomas died 1853 Queanbeyan; he had become Chief Constable there. Elizabeth died 1861 in Sydney. I have some of his convict records, also descendent info on most of their children including Maria Jane WEBBER (my GG-g'mother, who married Edwin LAND - also from Devon). Happy to swap this info; very interested in any other ancestral info, particularly parentage etc. Judy from Sydney, Australia.

red mail Thomas Patt/Jane Newcombe Descendents - (Alverdiscott - Devon)
I have found that my gr. grandfather John Patt (son of Thomas & Jane Newcombe Patt) was born 1862 in Alverdiscott, Devon, UK. John Patt and his wife emigrated to New York in about 1891. I cannot find where John Patt married, whether it was in New York or in Devon, England. I have that John Patt married Emma Delve, daughter of George & Ann (Ridd) Delve of Barnstaple, Devon, UK. Is there anyone out there that can help me with this? Also, when they emigrated to the United States, Emma Delve, my gr grandma, left behind 2 small children to be raised by her parents, George & Ann Delve. The children were Emma (b. 1883) and William(b. 1888) Delve. I cried when I read this from the back of an old picture of my great grandma Emma. I had already found Emma and William Delve living with George and Ann Ridd in Barnstaple in the 1891 UK census with their mother, Emma Delve, when my uncle sent me the picture of my great grandma (Emma Delve) with the information on the children handwritten on the back of it. Is there any way to find if William and Emma Delve married and had children of their own? I would love to contact them. Any help with this would be SO appreciated! Thank you. Ruth, USA

red mail Edward William Samuel Prouse born Ashbury Devon 1849 - (Ashbury - Devon)
I am trying to find out the name of my Grt Grt grandfathers mother. My grt grt grandfathers full name was Edward William Samuel Prouse and he was born in Ashbury between april and august 1949. There is no birth entry for him and he first appears on the 1851 census as Edward S Prouse living in north tawton with the Evans family as a visitor. There is an Ellen Burridge living there as a lodger also. He then appears on the 1861 census as Edward Prouse aged 11 inchagford as a servant with the Dodds family. He then disapears, he isnt on the 1871 census and doesnt reapear until 1873 when he has moved from devon to brotton in the north riding of yorkshire where he appears on the marriage index as Samuel Prouse when he married his wife Mary Ann Carter, she is from St cleer cornwall. They then appear on the 1881,1891 and 1901 censuses living in Marske again in Yorkshire with their children and he is down as Samuel Prouse. On the birth marriage certificate of my Great Grandad he is down as Samuel William Prouse, on his second marriage certificate to his second wife Mary Ann French he is down as Edward S Prouse and on his death certificate, he died on the 7/08/1932 he is Edward William Samuel Prouse. I know that he was an illigiamate child and his father is unknown. His mother however was thrown out of her home when her family found out she was pregnant, which is howcome he was born in Ashbury when there wasnt any prouses living there. What happened to his mother after her was born i dont know as by 1851 when he was 2 he was in north tawton with another family. In 1910 there was an advert put in the news of the world asking Edward W S Prouse to go back to devon to collect his inheritance so presumably his mother family knew about him but didnt know where he was, was that why he changed his name? was he hiding from them? anyway he never went to collect his inheritance. Does anyone know of a child in their family history that disapeared? Does anyone know of an illigimate child in their family history?
Charles Strickland - (Ashbury - Devon)
Charles was my great-great-great grandfather, and lived at Wadland Cottage, Ashbury, Devon, from around 1820 till he died in 1859. I'd be very interested to hear if anyone knows of any photos of him or his family (wife Elizabeth and children Louise, Silas and Henry), or indeed if anyone has any photos of Ashbury or of any of its other inhabitants around that time.

Have trawled the original parish registers for this family name. In the Overseers of the Poor Rates and payments there is a mother and daughter both with the name elizabeth each receiving regular monthly disbursementsand ocassional extra gifts given for items of clothing etc., from 1796 to 1801 when both had died. I can find no reference to mother and daughter as to why they received these monies. Nor can I find birth records for either or a marriage record for the mother. I accept that the child could be a bastard but can find no evidence for any bastardy orders locally. Any suggestions or further information on these ladies would be much appreciated. Thanks, Brian.
