red mail George Bowden 1782-1864
My great great grandfather James Boaden was born in Bishop's Tawton in 1829, the third son of George Bowden and Sarah Galliford - at least that is what I believe. However, available data does cast some doubt on George Bowden, and I would like to find any new information about him. George's birth date and place of birth have some questions. In three census returns - 1841 he lists not born in Devon; in 1851 as born in Somerset, 1861, as born in Ottery, Somerset. The birth date varies between 1782 and 1791. However, the only George Bowden I can find baptised in Somerset between 1778 and 1798 was the son of William and Martha, in Leighland, Somerset, in 1788. Leighland is some distance from Ottery, but since both William and Martha both came from Broadclyst, it may have been Ottery was where George spent his early years. George appears to have married Sarah Galliford in Chittlehampton in 1816 - however, the Devon Family History Society booklet listing Chittlehampton marriages from 1813 to 1837, shows Sarah Galliford marrying George Bawdon, but there is no record for a birth corresponding to that name. The three census returns all list George's wife as Sarah, but was that Sarah Galliford? In 1851 and 1861, Chittlehampton was listed as the birth place for Sarah. Does anyone out there have additional clues which would help me solve the unanswered questions?
