red mail John Paltridge
My ancestor, John Paltridge was born in Okehampton in 1832. He married Hannah Pinkstone in 1851 in Barnstaple, but did not list a father on his marriage certificate. Evidence points to him being illegitimate, with the probability that his mother was Ann Paltridge. He joined the Royal Navy, and the first signing on I have traced was 1854 on HMS Hogue. He later joined HMS Malacca, and in 1859 signed for ten years on HMS Arrogant. I am trying to trace any additional information, particularly concering his parentage. Further research makes me believe that John was the illegitimate son of Ann Paltridge, daughter of Richard and Joanna Paltridge, and therefore took his surname from his mother. Ann was removed, with child, by the Chagford Overseers in 1832. Richard and Joanna had a son born in 1819, and so the John appearing with them in the 1841 census in Great Torrington has to be their grandson.
