William HODGE born in Barnstaple married Maud Hartnoll PARKER in 1889 in Bideford She was born in Bishops Tawton in Devon. They had a Boot and Shoe shop in the High Street, five children of this marriage. William died in 1901 and the family split up. Maud married sometime later after moving to Cornwall. Two of the sons went off to Canada and made a new life over there.

My Gx2 Uncle was a sailmaker . He was born in1854 at Feniton near Ottery st Mary , Elizabeth was born in Falmouth Cornwall in 1858 .It is thought that he moved to Bideford about 1912. They are listed in the 1911 cencus living near Truro. I can find no record of the death of Elizabeth Jane (our family remember her as Bessie) Alf moved to Dartmouth in about 1920. I have made extensive enquiries in Devon @ Cornwall via FHS's but no success. I woud be grateful for any info. Jenny

I would love to know more about the Bartlett family who lived in Bideford. The father was called Richard Bartlett and he was born in Appledore in 1852. His wife was called Margaret Jane Wicketts. She was born in Bideford in 1856. They had 12 children. The first was Alfred. He was born in 1880. The other children were Fanny, William Edward, Emma Jane, Henry, Stanley, Maggie, Louie, May Ellen, Nellie, Robert and then Winifred Doris in 1907. I know a little about Alfred, William Edward and Henry but would love to know more about this family. Thank You.

My Aunt Margaret Harry was the district nurse in Bideford for most of her life until she died in the 1980s. Also her brother Fred Walker Harry may have lived in Bideford. Their sister Dorothea Harry also lived in Bideford from 1959 when she arrived back from Australia. Would love to have information of any of these people.

This lady was born in Bideford Devon 1826/1833, her surname was not jonson, she had a sister adelaide who became Mrs or was born Pillepaut,she also had a sister Anna. I cannot find her maiden name, she moved to London and had something to do with Henry Wellington Vallance a solicitor. she died in 1903, but withou her maiden name I cannot go any further. I cannot find a marriage to a Mr Jonson, nor does he appear on any census with her, although she is down as a wife on 1881, on 1891 down as a widow. Any help would be appreciated.

Henry Manship Acford was born in Bideford in 1807, the son of Henry Acford and Johanna nee Manship. Henry married Sarah Ann Mallett (1811-1896). Henry was described as a 'mariner' and was at sea for the 1851 census. In the 1861 census Sarah Ann was described as a widow. Suspect that Henry died at sea, possibly in the East Indies. Can anyone help with information please?

I am looking for my grandmother, clarice muriel Heath nee chance. she was born on 24th July 1906 in Bromley Kent. She married my grandfather Jack Heath in september 1927. They had 3 children, Patricia Mavis, Sylvia Doreen(my mother)and Norman. At some point they moved to wealdstone middlesex. Clarice left the family home around 1944, she was living in central london,near the royal albert hall and possibly a secretary to a doctor. We think at some point she moved to Bideford but we are not sure. It would be lovely to find out what happened to her.

Alfred was an Inland Revenue Excise Officer. He appeared in the census on 30 March 1851 in Barnstaple. The address was: Bear Street. Living with parents. Scholar. He and Sarah ASHTON had 7 following children. And so it goes onÂ… Anyone willing to share findings with me?

The men were all attorneys.Arthur and John went to Australia and Charlie struck trouble in London where it seems he was dropped from the legal partnership, Prideaux Le Blanc & Smale, possibly for unethical activities.

Seeking info re: Richard Mullins (Mullen, Mullens)born 1792 Bideford. He was tried at Devon Assizes on March 16 1818 on a charge of larceny. He was convicted and sentenced to 7 yrs transportation. He lived in Australia for a while then I lost him. Could he have returned home and is he the Richard Mullins listed in the 1881 census as being a boarder of William Tailor of Landkey. Seeking any info on this man and family.

The total average annual expenditure on the poor, during the 3 years preceding the formation of the Union, was £7333, but in 1838, it was only £5225, & in 1849/50, £6428.17s.1d. The Workhouse was erected in 1835/6, & has room for 200 paupers. H A Harvie Esq, is union clerk & supt.registrar; the Rev H Alford, chaplain; Mr & Mrs Stevenson, master & matron of the Workhouse.
