red mail MYSTERY!! - (Cromford - Derbyshire)
HAVE NOW BEEN HELPED ON THIS - THANKS :-) ..................................... According to my records John Grant (born Cromford) married Sarah Elizabeth Frost (born Belper C1838). I have found a marriage index dated Jan-Mar 1853 John Grant/Sarah Frost. John and Sarah went on to have around 10 children between 1854-1876 - the youngest being Sarah Lily A Grant who is my partners great grand mother. However I only found them living together in the 1871 census with several of their children - residing in St. Peter, Derbyshire. I AM PERPLEXED however because I do appear to have found John in an 1851 and 1861 census but it really doesn't tie up!! e.g. 1851 census John Grant is living with Susanna Grant (she is married, head of household age 51, b1800), born Cromford. John Grant is listed as also born in Cromford and relationship is shown as "Son in Law". They are living at 189 Ward Sreet, Ripley. In the 1861 census I see Susannah Grant (head, married age 60) living with her son Joshua age 30, and John Grant Son in Law (married, age 33 - labourer) with grandaughter Eliza b1855 age 6. John and his wife Sarah Frost had a daughter called Anna Eliza in c1854 which may tie grandaughter Eliza to being Anna Eliza. Can anyone shed any light on what's going on here as I'm bit of a newbie!! Is it likely that on 2 separate census records - taken 10 years apart - a person could be marked as son in law when they are perhaps a step son?? Of course, I could be looking at the wrong John Grant, born roughly the same year in the same village and I'm double checking this too!! Thanks Nicola
