red mail Edith Powles in Willington 1892-1900 and Derbyshire amateur music late 19th century
Hi, I have been researching the life of Miss Edith Powles, who lived at Vere Lodge, Willington, Derbshire 1892-1900. She had trained as a musician and seems to have been the prime mover behind an adhoc occasional group of amateur musical entertainers called Valley Concert Party. She also sang with the Derby Orpheus and Madrigal Society, and taught music at Vere Lodge. There's plenty about her activity during this period, in online local newspapers. But I'd love to be able to find a photo, either just her, or indeed of Valley Concert Party, the Opheus and Madrigal Society, or Vere Lodge, Willngton. She later married in Argentina to William Hawkins, who is buried at Willington. We DO have a photo of a chamber orchestra from this period, at an unknown south Derbyshire location, which is likely outside their practice rooms. Could be the Orpheus group. We believe two women in the photo to be two of the Spilsbury sisters, from the noted Findern family, though it is not impossible that a seated woman vocalist could be Edith. The double bass player is Joseph Ivens of Willington, no others have been identified. If anyone is looking for information on Edith Powles, or her future husband William Bobart Hawkins, and related familiy members, I do have quite a bit I can share. Many thanks
