red mail Laura Jefferson - (Grinsdale - Cumberland)
I am trying to unravel the mystery of my grandmothers real mother. I believe she was born to a Laura Jefferson who lived in/around Grinsdale/Longburgh area. I have traced a family to Grinsdale who was Simpson Jefferson (born around 1845) and his wife Isabella Jefferson (born around 1945 to John and Mary Wilson of Wigton). It appears Isabella had a daughter Elizabeth out of wedlock who was known as Elizabeth Wilson Jefferson. Simpson and Isabella married in around 1874 and had 6 children born alive plus stepdaughter Elizabeth. 3 children died leaving Laura Isabella Jefferson(born ard 1877), John Winder Jefferson (ard 1889)and Arthur Graham Jefferson(ard 1885) I believe Laura Isabella to be my grandmother's real mother. My grandmother was Robina James Telford Jefferson born in 1907 in Edinburgh (it was common to send girls away to have their babies). Her birth certificate shows her mother as Laura Jefferson and her father was a retired farmer. They returned to Carlisle and my grandmother was given to the local 'adoption' lady who was Mrs Brown and who subsequently kept her and she was known as Robina Brown (but obviously birth certificate is Jefferson) When she was around 14 she was told who her mother was and told to go to Grinsdale farm to 'meet' them. She walked from Carlisle to Grinsdale and promptly had the door closed in her face. The only other time any 'family' connections were made was at Carlisle station when she saw one of the Jeffersons. I can find no trace of Laura Jefferson after she had my grandmother in 1907, she appears on the census in 1901 aged 24. I have checked all deaths for her up until the 1911 census with no luck. Grinsdale churchyard only has Simpson, Isabella and Elizabeth in it, there is no sign of Laura Isabella Jefferson. It is also assumed that the James Telford in her name is the father of Robina??? So also any information about him. Would like any information really that would help us know what happened to Laura.

red mail Pearson - (Little Clifton - Cumberland)
My grandfather John Pearson was born at Little Clifton 1887. His mother was Janet/Jet Briggs. John went to NZ about 1912. He looked up his uncle, John Briggs, then married his cousin Honor Eva . John P's younger bro Harry came years later. Now there is a whole clan of descendants in Canterbury NZ. I would like to see some photos of the place where he was born .
red mail Hannah and William Parkin of Longthwaite - (Longthwaite - Cumberland)
"William Parkin of Longthwaite was buried 9 Dec 1845 aged 47" according to the Wigton Burial Register, JAC854. William was my ggg-grandfather. He was married to Hannah Taylor, and they had 10 known children born in Cumberland between 1820 and 1839. Going from the children's christening records, William and Hannah must have come in to a bit of money about 1820: he was a Labourer at Buttermere in Feb 1820, but a farmer at Crookdake in 1821 and a farmer at Gillmoor 1823-1827, then innkeeper at the Wellington Inn in Bromfield 1829-1831. That didn't last: William was a Labourer at Warblebank in 1834, then at High Longthwaite in 1839. In the 1851 census, Hannah was living at High Moor, Woodside, Wigton, and listed as "Pauper Farmer's Widow." In the record of her 1855 burial in Wigton, Hannah was named as "widow of Wm Parkin of Sykes, Labourer." I would like to know more about William and Hannah's backgrounds and their family.
