My ggggrandfather was born in Ainstable and wed Ann Catton of Alston, after banns in Kirkoswald, in 1812. Their firstborn, Joseph left bound for Liverpool where by 1836 he had become a police officer and wed Mary Anne Brough, a Whitehaven girl, in St Nicholas Church at Pier Head. In the 1841 Liverpool census son Joseph is boarding his 14 yr-old brother Edward, with wife Mary Anne and 2 daughters. In the 1841 Ainstable census father Joseph and wife Ann (aged 49 and 45, respectively) with 3 daughters and 2 sons ranging in age from 11 years to 6 months, have or work a Channel Pool farm. I would appreciate anyone to contact and share any information with me on my Ainstable kin. Thank you...John, USA.

i am researching my Paternal Grandmother whose name was Ellen Snowball nee LITTLE,the 1911 census informs me that she was born in a place named Baggora Cumberland,after trying to find this place it seems that it is incorrect and I am advised to look at BAGGROW.Ellen was born in 1871 and moved to Hexham where she obviously married and raised 2 sons and she died in Hexham in 1949. To date I have been unable to find any birth or marriage records for her.I think the LITTLE family were farmers but without any specific info.I cannot be sure.If any one can advise me where I might find the info I need I would be most grateful.

Looking for any information re William Luck born c1785. In various census papers it says he is born in Blackwell. As there is a Blackwell near Darlington it has always been assumed that he came from there, however in the 1851 census he says he was born in Sunderland. We have established that there is a "Blackwell" in or near Sunderland so maybe that is where he came from. He married Mary Walker in Mansfield in 1805. They lived in 'the Boathouse'. His son Stephen married Jane Stamp in 1851. They were the parents of my gt grandmother Hannah Luck. Any information - especially where William and Mary came from gratefully received.

We are looking for information about the following person: "George Rooke, an eminent Quaker minister of Ireland, son of Thomas, was born at Boltonwood (parish of Boulton) in Cumberland, England, in 1652. He lost his father when he was eleven years old, and his mother was left with several small children to support. At sixteen he was apprenticed to Thomas Drewry, a carpenter and joiner, one of the Society of Friends, and became a member of society. At about the age of twenty-five he appeared in the ministry and travelled much in that service. In 1686, he removed to Limerick, Ireland, and married Joan the daughter of John Cooke. In 1693, he settled in Dublin. His wife died there, 7 Mo. 17, 1737 and was buried in the Friends' burial ground on Cork Street, aged eighty four. He spent his declining years with his widowed daughter Rachel Carlton and her children, and died 12 Mo 7, 1742. --Rutty 334-7; Leadbeater, 212-226." Any help would be appreciated! Thank you, Jana

He then married Elizabeth Taylor at Manchester Cathedral Lancashire in 1847 and on their marriage certificate his father is given as John also but of course, no mother's name. William and Sarah Thomas were witnesses and Sarah was Sarah Routledge and married William T. at Manchester Cathedral Lanc. in 1841. I would dearly like to find the elder John's background and his wife's name and exactly where the younger John was baptised. John Jnr. marrried again after Elizabeth died and lived in Wavertree, Lancs.

In 1943 my Grandmother received a letter from the above named who lived at Gatehouse Farm, Bothel. She wrote to my Grandmother regarding her nephew whose ship was sunk during that year. My Uncle's ship had also been sunk but he had been picked up and was a prisoner of War in Japan. She was writing to see if her nephew had been on the same ship. I would love to return a copy of the letter she wrote to a family member as I am sure it would mean a lot to them. The letter has been in my late Grandmothers handbag for 76 years she kept it and two other letters to remind her how lucky she was to have her son returned to her.

This couple are buried at Thornthwaite.In the the 1861 Census Henry and Ann Walker were at Lanefoot.( Ann's 1st Husband was Banks and Sarahs son Banks).In 1871 Ann was again a widow but still at Lanefoot. Anne and Henry also buried at Thornthwaite. Henry's sister Dinah appears to have married Banks and Sarah Bowes son Thomas. By 1881 Anne had died but her son George and his family were at Lanefoot.

All the census state place of birth Burgh by sands apart from 1861 which states Burgh. She wed Charles Brannen in Carlisle and had a son James in 1831before moving to Barnsley and returning back to Carlisle before 1851 a widow with 5 children and lived in Johns Street Caldewgate. I am looking for any information about John Brisco (died 1760) who married Catherine Musgrave - daughter of Sir Richard Musgrave, Their son James was a customs officer at Beaumaris, Anglesey. His daughter -Mary Horton Brisco married Stephen Price and he was my great, great, great, great grandfather!

Small village south of Brampton with historic church. My gfather, James Varley, was C of E Schoolmaster approx 1893 - 1908; school now demolished but was south of the village towards Croglin. Anyone got old photos of the school/staff & pupils?

My 3x great grandmother Hannah Robinson is listed on the 1881 and 1891 census as living at Cumrew School house as a lodger with the schoolmaster, John Rawson, and his wife Mary Ann. In 1901 Hannah and Mary Ann are living in Kirkbymoorside. I believe that Hannah and her daughter Clara had made a trip to Australia in the 1860s, didn't like it and caught the next boat home. I am interested in any connection with the Rawsons, and how Hannah and Clara came to be living with them.
