When Thomas Baylis, mariner, my gg grandfather married Margaret Wright in 1805 in Crosscanonby it was by licence and the surety was William Armstrong a hairdresser of Maryport.Thomas was also of Maryport and Margaret was of Bowscales, Bromfield. I cannot fix Margarets birth and wonder what the connection was to Armstrong. Has anyone any ideas?

Can anyone tell me where a building or location called 'Friends Place' was situated on Crosby Street, Maryport. My brother and I visited Maryport earlier in the year and walked the length of Crosby Street but we couldn't find anything about 'Friends Place' or where it was located? My great-grandmother, Isabella Briggs (nee Casson) and four children were living there in 1911.

Looking for information about my G.Grandfather a Charles Cairey c.1864 or his wife Catherine. up until 1907 the family were living a Llandaff, Cardiff Wales and then moved to Cumbria area. Charles could have been a miner. Catherine died approx. 1912. What happened to Charles? My Grandfather was James Cairey c.1902 and my Mother Elizabeth Cairey was born at Maryport, Cumbria 1941.

I am trying to find more details of my husband's family that lived in Maryport and Cockermouth. An Uncle had a butchers shop in Maryport. Mary Alice Cartmer married Tom Bennett, they lived at 25 King Street and emigrated to New Zealand in 1926 on the Ionic. I am looking for John Giles Walker who, from Census information comes from Maryport. I have found him on the 1881, 1891 and 1901 Census with his wife Elizabeth Mary HEY from Hetton, Durham and the family lived in Northumberland. I have been unable to find him on the 1871 or 1861 Census, so have no idea of his parents names. I would be grateful if anyone has any information on this man so I can further my research.

Hi, I am looking for further details regarding the above-mentioned families. My grandmother Susannah Walker Steele was born in Cockermouth in 1893. Her mother Mary Brown b.+/_1869 married John Steele b. 1860. Her grandmother's maiden name was Susannah Walker, daughter of William Walker and Anne Donald. Susannah Walker's siblings appear to have been Wilson Walker b. 1846, Jane Walker 1847 and Robert Neill Walker, a few years later. My grandmother and her parents, together with her younger sister Annie Talbot Steele left Cumberland in the early 1900's for South Africa. Two siblings Jean and Campbell died in Maryport at a very young age. I beleve that William Walker was an eminent shipbuilder, that the Brown family were grocer/shopkeeper's and know for certain that John Steele had a Colliery Mine Manager's Certificate. Any further information or suggestions as to how I should/could proceed further, would be much appreciated. Sincerely, Terence.
