Syd Crossley had no children and had lived in Bolenowe since 1948. His second wife died 1955 at the same address, viz. Crossley Cottage, Bolenowe nr. Troon. Syd played minor character parts in over 100 films up to 1942, inc'g in Hollywood 1924-1929. He toured with ENSA in the Middle East in WWII. I am keen to find the forenames and birth names of his two wives. Syd started in English music hall in 1900 and was then known as The Long Tall Comic. In 1938 he was living in Colindale, London NW9. His collection of cinema stills was displayed at King's Cinema Camborne following his death at Barncoose Hospital, Redruth. The only mourners at his service at Penmount Crematorium were Walter Edwards, shopkeeper of Troon, and Mrs J Gessey, a near neighbour.

My 3xgreat grandfather John Hockin, baptized 1786, was a carpenter in Charlestown, Cornwall. I've searched the St Austell parish register for his parents but its very difficult/impossible to read the old entries. He married Mary Vercoe at St.Austell in 1812 and they raised three sons, William, John, and Thomas who all became carpenters, joiners, shipwrights, etc. I'm descended from the youngest son, Thomas who moved to Portsea in the mid-1800's. I'm searching for the parents of the original John Hockin and if anyone has traced the family back earlier than 1786 I'd be interested to hear from them. I descend from John Harvey (born c 1823) and Hannah P Wasley (born c1823) according to the 1842 census, they both lived in Cusveorth Coombe with their respective familes prior to getting married in 1846 and having a son (John Polsue Harvey) in 1847. Some time after this birth they moved to Australia - possibly first to South Australia - then definitely to Western Australia in 1859. Hannah was the daugher of Joseph Wasley and Susanna Polsue, and John is possibly the son of Jane Martin and Paul Harvey. This last detail is uncertain. My Great Grandfather, Job Hockaday (1829-1931) was Secretary to the Delabole Slate Company, and traces of his first house were still visible near the top of the quarry a few years ago. The youngest of his 11 children was Percy, who married Margaret Ellen WILLIAMS before he went to sea, dying in Vancouver in 1953. He left a daughter, Gwladys, who I believe was a music teacher. She married Giulio QUADRANI, who had been an Italian POW in the area in WW2. When where were Gwladys and Giulio born, married, died an buried?

William LOBB born 1809 in Cornwall, England, died May 1864 in San Francisco. His younger brother, Thomas LOBB born 1817 in Cornwall, England died in DEVORAN, Cornwall, England in 1894. There is a small memorial garden to their memory at Devoran in Cornwall, UK. They were two of England's pioneering plant hunters during the 1840's and 1850's, travelling the world looking for 'new' plants for their employer to propagate and sell to Victorian gardeners. Does anyone have any knowledge of the whereabouts of their 'specimen books' or other artefacts of their's please? Or any papers and letters relating to them? Unfortunately their employer's records were mostly destroyed during the late 1900's. They both worked for the famous Veitch nurseries. Known descendants are REYNOLDS,COFFIN and JEFFREE families.
