'Car' (Caroline or Catherine) was one of a pair of twins who found themselves in Cork City Union Workhouse at some point in childhood - maybe born there around 1843 This would take in the the terrible potato famine that swept through Ireland several times after 1847. She and her sister were Catholic. 'Car' came into England, probably in her teens. In Hampshire she met up with William Dawson, a former soldier from the Rifle Brigade who had been invalided out in the wake of the Indian Mutiny - as it was then described. They had several children, were enumerated as 'Gypsy hawkers' and travelled - mostly through Hampshire. They settled near Basingstoke after 1901 in the village of Ellisfield - and later at Cliddesden. Hoping to find any trace of her in Cork city or county.

I know quite a bit about them once they came to the UK but i know nothing of their lives in Ireland. Any information would be very welcome.

Patrick Henry Melia came to the US age 10, so most of our family information is filtered through his childhood memory, but he listed his parents as John Melia and Ann Johnson Melia and believed he was born in Cork City 17 March 1839. Both parents were born early 1800s, father believed to have died in the 1840s; mother died at sea out of Liverpool in early 1849 aboard CALEDONIA BRANDER. Patrick arrived in New York City in a family party with a Mr & Mrs Patrick Melia, age 50, and an infant Ann Melia born at sea. He was sent to Canada, became a Wagonmaker, and moved to Michigan in the US, then Kansas, and died in Ford, Kansas in 1899. Can any one help me please ? trying to find out about Elizabeth Elsmore born 1852 in Cork, she married a William Wain Derbyshire England.
It is alleged that Oranto Charles McKELLIFF was born in Cork Ireland. I mean no respect when I say alleged, as I have yet to see anything to confirm this. In 1915 when he married Vera Eves/Evis May DODDRIDGE he said on his marriage certificate that he was aged 34 - that would equal a birth around 1881. But he may have under-quoted his age as his bride was much younger than him, no matter when he was born. On his marriage certificate he wrote that his father was also called Oranto Charles McKELLIFF - no proof of the validity of that yet, until more is uncovered in other records. However when Oranto Charles McKELLIFF died aged 84 in 1954 it was alleged on that death certificate that Oranto Charles McKELLIFF that he was born in Cork Ireland. That would equal a birth in 1870. Death certificates often have inaccurate information so without other verifying data I cannot be certain his age at death, and place of birth are accurate, yet. Also before he died a further given name was added to his name, so when he died he was listed as Oranto Charles St Patrick McKELLIFF. Possibly St Patrick was his confirmation name.. It is alleged that Oranto (born circa 1870 - 1881) also served in the Boer war and the first World War for the British Army. No proof of that yet either. Would need more work on the Public Records available at TNA to confirm that alleged enlistment. Once again I mean no respect to anyone who truly believes this is what he did - it is just that I have not seen anything yet that verifies the assertions. One relative thinks the birth occurred on 12 August 1870 in Cork Ireland - but has not quoted any verifying records and I have no way of knowing where the date was discovered and the validity of it. That is why I will still called it the alleged date of birth - or perhaps baptism? Seeking any McKELLIFF descendants who can assist a relative (of the above Oranto McKELLIFF) in Adelaide South Australia to find out more - especially confirmation of his true and correct date of birth, place of birth and parents of the said Oranto Charles McKELLIF (senior and junior versions of same) please

Patrick Allen born sometime between 1854-1864 in Cork Ireland, not too sure of this. Married Sarah Moran. Don't know when or where. They lived in Needham MA USA and had 5 children. Lizzie worked for New England telephone for over 43 years until her retirement in 1959. red mail A butcher called MARKS
My great-grandmother Eliza Cameron nee MARKS died in the Walcha District of NSW in 1890 and her death record simply says her father was a butcher -- that's all. Eliza Marks left Cork in 1835 as an assisted migrant for NSW in 1835. Dr Elizabeth Rushen has published a book about these adventurous "Single & Free" women migrants. Eliza had been born somewhere in Ireland around 1810-1815, supposedly. She couldn't sign her name and left behind no distinguishing features. Has anyone come across a butcher called MARKS in southern Ireland in the 1830's? Any help would be much appreciated.

red mail Mary STEVENS
Does anyone have information on Mary Stevens who was born in Cork, Ireland about 1810 according to census forms. She was living in Bradford, Yorkshire, UK in 1851,1861 & 1871 with her husband John Marshall Jowett; a letter press printer. My grandmother seems to think there may be a connection with a house on the River Liffey. Which of course goes through Dublin.
Has anyone any information on a casle that existed and was in ruins in the 1940's in Cork, Ireland. My grandmother was Eleanor (Elinor) Conway and I was told that it was her great uncle who let the castle go to ruins because of financial difficulties. I have seen a photo of the ruins in a book which unfortunately was taken by a family member and was lost. The book was called Castles of Britain but one copy I got was not the one it was printed in so I presume there existed an earlier version. This was printed early 50's. Any help would be appreciated as I live in Australia and find it difficult to get hold of old books.
red mail John Carroll
Seeking details about my g grandfather John Carroll, born in Cork abt.1828, who arrived in Australia about 1849. Before coming to Australia, he may have been in the British Army in India (according to family folklore). He married Mary O'Shea (b abt 1833) in St.Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, NSW, on 26 September 1854. In 1859, a son's birth certificate shows John Carroll to be still resident in Sydney and his occupation as "Labourer". On 1 June 1861, he joined the NSW Prison Service at Darlinghurst Gaol in Sydney, and retired from the Service on 31 March 1892 at the rank of Deputy Governor. He died in Sydney on 30 Nov 1901. red mail Cork Origins of Mary Agnes McCarthy ?
My family would love to know more about the origins of my 2nd great grandmother, Mary Agnes McCarthy. I am hoping that someone might by chance recognize her particular McCarthy line by this description. Mary Agnes was born in the City of Cork, Cork Co., Ireland. Her DOB is possibly March 24, 1830, but this subject to error. Mary Agnes immigrated to New Orleans, Louisiana, USA in the late 1840’s, where she met and married Thomas McCormack in 1849. Thomas was a sailor, and is believed to have been born in the Whitechapel district of London in the 1820’s. The couple later reared a large family together in Kansas, USA. Here are some additional details that might be helpful, but unfortunately all are subject to error: Her parents may have been named John McCarthy and Ellen O’Brien. She may have been baptized in the Church of SS. Peter and Paul in Cork. My family also believes that Mary Agnes may have had an older sister named Margaret McCarthy, possibly born on Jan. 6, 1825, who also ended up in Kansas, married to a Richard Brown. Richard was also from Cork. If any of these details ring a bell, would love to hear from you. Thanks!
