My great grandfather Henry Kirkman was born in Alloa, Clackmannan, around 1831. He somehow ended up in Australia, around 1849 it is thought, perhaps via the Victorian goldrush, but married my great grandmother Rose Annah Dempsey in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia on 29th August 1864 in St. John's Methodist Church. Rose Annah Dempsey was from Rasharkin or Ballymena in County Antrim in Northern Ireland. I have seen the original marriage register and it lists Henry's father as John Kirkman, woollen manufacturer and his mother as Mary Thom(p)son. Rose Annah Dempsey's father was listed as William Dempsey, also woollen manufacturer and her mother as Margaret Jane Shallow (this is probably a mistake and most likely to be Shannon). the witnesses were John Smitgh and Kate Murray. Henry Kirkman was granted 80 acres land selection in Calliope in central Queensland near Gladstone and Rockhampton. Henry was a gold miner in Calliope. He and Rose Annah had 5 sons, first two were twins Henry and William, then James Shannon, then John, and finally my grandfather Samuel Kirkman who was born in 1874. Henry Kirkman died in 1909 in Calliope, Queensland, Australia. None of my family have any more information apart from a lovely photograph of Henry and Rose Annah with my grandfather Samuel taken when Samuel was about 16 years of age, therefore taken around 1890. I cannot find Henry Kirkman in the 1841or 1851 scottish censuses, nor in any of the English censuses, his father John also cannot be identified at all. I cannot even find any more information in Australia. Henry was very literate as I have seen copies of letters he wrote to the Land Commissioner in Sydney around the 1880s when he was in dispute with some of the miners in the township of Calliope over an access road which went through his property. If you have any information I would be so grateful if you could please make contact with me. I have been trying to find Henry Kirkman for about 4 years now and have almost exhausted every possibility. With thanks and best wishes, Sharon
red mail Hall who went to live in Wales
Hi. we're looking for any Hall/s who went to live in Wales, specifically Aberystwyth, in the mid to late 1700s. We have a Sarah Hall, born Aber around 1799, but family wisdom has her ancestors as being from Clackmannan. Her son was Edward Hall, 1825-1901, a mariner, born, bred and died in Aberyswyth. Any info gratefully recieved, or any reasons why people left Clackmannan around that time; was there a decline in jobs, any large exoduses? Cheers, Leonie
red mail Tillicoultry
James Carmichael was born either on the 13 09 1911 or 11 09 1913. Unfortunately James couldn't never quite remember the exact date as he was orphaned at a very young age. He actually went through life thinking he was born in 1913 and was extremely surprised when he received the paperwork for his impending retirement stating he was born in 1911. He had five elder sibblings three sisters and two brothers. Their mother died when James was five, all the children were looked after by relatives until their father died shortly after and were placed in an orphanage. When James left the orphanage he become a sheppard and worked and lived in the mountains until he joined the Royal Scots Grey and moved down South where he meet and married Barbara Mary Smith. I know that the above info is a bit sparse, but James never spoke about his child hood mainly because he didn't like to reminise, but info if there is any would be much appreciated. Many thanks
