red mail Charles & Frances Bury/Berry of Stockport
Thanks so much to everyone here that helped with my last request. It had been the alternate spelling of Berry that was giving me the problem, and that I should have been looking for MINNIE (as I had already determined) and not MILLIE that had gotten stuck in my brain. Charles and Frances listed on US Census records in 1900 as Berry, in 1930 as Bury and as having been born circa 1867 in England and married circa 1887. I found a ship's manifest indicating their daughter Elizabeth Ann Bury was born in Stockport in October 1889 (though the year could be 1890 or 1891). Other children in the family are: MINNie born circa 1888; Ellen born circa 1892; Henry born circa 1894; In 1895 they emigrated to Pawtucket, RI, USA. (three other children Walter, Edna M., & Ernest were born in RI - and the 1900 US Census indicates one deceased child DoB & name not provided). I have found UK census records for the family in 1881 and BMD records for the kids births (mother surname CLARKE) and their marriage. I have a lead that Charles may be the son of Ann Cheetham and Henry Berry (born in Hadfield). Frances I found in a household in the 1881 Census headed by Henry (born in Poynton) and Betty (born in Hazel Grove) Thanks for all the help, I hope I can be as helpful to you or other in the future.

red mail Harrison Family of Stockport
I am seeking information on the Harrison Family of Stockport. Joseph Harrison (c1780-1848) was a schoolmaster at the "Harrison's Academy" at Mount Street in Stockport. Joseph Harrison was married to Sally (born c1780 Halifax, Yorkshire) and they had two children: Betsy born Saddleworth, Yorkshire c1812 and Thomas born Glossopdale 1815. It is possible Thomas was baptized at the Littlemoor Chapel (Independent) at Glossop. Also possible that his father Joseph was pastor there from 1812-? Thomas married Elizabeth Collier (b. 1825 Stockport) in 1841 (non-conformist marriage) and he was also a schoolmaster at the Harrison's Academy and later an Insurance Agent (Scottish Amicable Life) and Real Estate Agent. Thomas went on to have seven children with Elizabeth. I am descended from his son Joseph b. 1853 who migrated to Australia with wife Fanny Maria Holland and son John Thomas in 1879. I'm trying to work out whether my ancester Joseph Harrison was the same man who was arrested and gaoled for 3 years for sedition in 1820 for his part in speeches made as part of the Radical Reform Movement alongside Sir Charles Wolseley. I found an entry in Cobbett's Weekly Political Register of 1820 which covered the trial in some detail and indicates that: "Harrison, until lately, was a stranger in the county of Chester, and is described in the indictment as a schoolmaster; he formerly settled in Derbyshire, but was a resident at the time he committed the offence." Is this just coincidence or could it be the same man? Any other information about the family is welcome. Thankyou Anthony
red mail Cooper and Bover Families
My, James Cooper was born Sheffield but lived in Stockport at the time of the 1841 census. I have managed to find a record showing a marriage record in 1821 to a Martha Bover at Stockport. On the 1841 census he has 8 children but there is no mention of Martha, presumably she died prior to the census being taken. There is however a child, Jane Bover listed with the family, which seems to confirm the James Cooper listed is my ancestor. Also I found a record of Martha's christening in Jan 1802. Her parents were shown as Thomas and Mary Bover. Has anyone any information about the Bover family or the Coopers please? Thanks, Sheila

red mail Gordon Family in Stockport
Part of this family emmigrated to Fall River Mass. during the cotton famine (American Civil War c1861-1865). There was an embargo on cotton exports to England, but the mills in Fall River were thriving. My last known ancestor, Joshua Gordon, was born In Stockport approx 1812. He married Mary Ann (Williamson b.1818)probably about 1837. They had several children, Joseph 1838), Thomas(1839), James(1842), Timothy(1849), Rebecca(1852), Ely(1856). There is an intriguing entry in the 1841 Census, with Joshua and Mary Ann living on Toll Bar St. with their two sons (Joseph and Thomas) as well as an older woman, Rebecca Stott b.1779. There are also two other adult women (Jamima 1815 and Mary 1823) as well as two other children (John 1836, George 1837) all with the same last name "Gorden." Thomas and James emmigrated about 1865, and most of the rest of the family in 1869, after Joshua's death. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone out there? My attempts to look up Church records (Catholic) in Chester failed to turn up anything.
