red mail Wartime memories - (Lacharn, Laugharne, Talacharn - Carmarthenshire)
I woke to a sound I had never heard before - the cries of many, many seabirds. This was in 1941, before the experimental station at Pendine had frightened the birds away, and I was a London child staying with relatives at a cottage on the Cliff Walk. I made friends with the children living at the Castle House, their father was Richard Hughes the author. These were the most free and happiest of my childhood memories, having the run of the castle grounds, or if the Hughes family were away, paddling about the estuary mud in my wellington boots. Nobody stopped me, luckily I became friendly with the family who still ran the ferry to Llansteffan, and was warned by them about tides and soft areas, so I survived. Today (at the age of 75) I looked at Laugharne on the internet - as I would like to see it again - and found myself moved to tears by some of the beautiful pictures I found. I would love to find some old acquaintances, my maiden name was Simon.
