red mail Cummins in Carlow
My father John Anthony Cummins was born in County Carlow in Ireland in 1915 and came to England (Manchester) before his 12th birthday. His father was James Cummins (b.1863). James was married twice, first to a Catherine Delaney, and then to Eliza(beth) Baines whose father I believe was a Major Thomas Baines. Another surname I have is Rossiter which I believe was James mother's maiden name. Any information on these families would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks, Kathleen
red mail TOOLE, Elizabeth
Elizabeth TOOLE was born in Carlow in 1824 to John and Julia TOOLE. They also had another daughter, Anne. John TOOLE was in the army at some stage as he was listed as a 'pensioner' upon the family's arrival in Australia in 1833 and he continued to receive a 'commuted pension' until at least 1846. The family departed from Liverpool, England 6th December, 1832 as steerage passengers on the ill-fated ship "Hibernia". On 5/2/1833 the ship caught fire and the Toole family were among the fortunate few who survived. After 6 days in a lifeboat they were picked up by a convict ship and taken to Rio, transferred to the "Adelaide" which took them took Hobart, VDL, from where they travelled on to Sydney, NSW, arriving in June 1833. John TOOLE became a police officer in NSW. Both daughters married in Maitland in the Hunter Valley in the early 1840's and the extended family then moved to Moreton Bay (later Ipswich/Brisbane) in Queensland. Elizabeth TOOLE had, in 1843, married Joseph BRENNAN, a convict from Tipperary, who had been granted a Conditional Pardon in 1842. They returned to the Scone in the Hunter Valley, NSW in early 1850's where Eliza(beth) died, aged 35, in 1859. She was my great-great-grandmother, John and Julia TOOLE being great-great-GREAT-grandparents. Any information about them, their life, John's army career or clues to help me on my way with the Irish search would be greatly appreciated.

red mail Mary Ford
My 3xgreat grandmother was Mary Ford (nurse) B: circa 1800 of County Carlow. She had two daughters Elizabeth B:1826 & Mary B:1831 both given the name Ford. Mary & girls travelled to England & ended up as nurse/housekeeper to my 3xgreat grandfather Robert Suckling in Finchingfield, Essex. Six months after his wife Catherine (nee Attwood) died (1831), he married Mary & she became Mary Suckling. Her daughters kept the Ford name. Mary & Robert had two more children, John Suckling B:1834 & Maria B:1836. In 1851 Robert was placed in Bocking Union Workhouse & Mary continued as head of household (Census 1851). No idea when she died or where she is buried (likely Finchingfield). I'm assuming she was married in Ireland so her maiden wasn't Ford. Any of this sound familiar? Would love to find out more about her & how she came to Essex.

red mail O'Neil(l) from Kilbride, Tullow, County Carlow
My husband's father was Patrick Joseph (Paddy) O'Neil born in Kilbride, Tullow, County Carlow (according to the papers he filled out for his pension in Canada) 18 Mar 1887. He later emigrated to Canada. Some of this O'Neill family (Paddy lost an "l" somewhere along the line) was still resident in County Carlow in the 1960s when my husband's older sister, Peggy, visited there. Paddy's father was also Patrick O'Neil(l) b 1850-d 1936, who married Annie Lacey b 1865-d 1947. They came to Canada some years after Paddy did--he and his brothers worked to bring them over. If anyone knows descendants of this family, or has details for the birthplaces of Patrick senior and his wife Annie, please contact me!
