i am researching George James Aungier, son of Michael Aungier. Michael was born in Ely, c1779. This is a possible baptism, but I don't know for sure that it is the right Michael Aungier: 5 Nov 1779 Trinity, Ely, parents John & Mary Aungier. (Their other children may be William Aungier bapt 19 Mar 1764; John Aungier bapt 19 Apr 1766; Robert Aungier bapt 26 Jan 1768; John Aungier bapt 3 May 1769; Mary Aungier bapt 21 Aug 1771; Thomas Aungier bapt 18 Apr 1777.) Michael Aungier married Ann Williams in Marylebone, 1802, and thereafter lived in London. I can supply a lot more information about his later life, but am keen to find out more about his origins. Can anybody help, please?

I am trying to find out more about a family called Sindal/Sindall/Sindle who lived in Ely right from early 1800s to probably now. My greatgran was born Charlotte Sindle in 1835, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah Taylor. Thomas was the son of Thomas and Jane Garratt. I believe that the next family back were William and Mary Cooper. There were many Sindle families with different spellings so not easy to confirm who is who. My gt grandmother was Francis Hansed born in 1816 & baptized on 12th June 1816 in St Peter, Wisbech. Her mother was Eve Pillingham born 1771 in Elm and her father was Joshua Hansed born 1763 in Elm. That's where the Hansed & Pillingham family history stops so i would like to hear from anyone who knows anything else about both families. Robert and Eleanor Scott, my GGGG grandparents were Governor and Matron of the Ely House of Correction in 1841. I am descended from their son Henley Barlow Scott who became a solicitor's clerk. I am still looking for descendants of William & Caroline Lee from Walpole Lane and Silver Street Ely. Caroline was also a LEE before marriage. Dau of John & Charlotte Lee nee Sindle. Will and Caro had 8 children. William John b 1878, Bertram 1880/1 Agnes 1884, Charlotte 1885/6, William 1888, Thomas R 1891, Madge 1894/5. On 1911 census it shows that 1 child died before 1911.?? The younger William died in WW1 in 1916 and is on Ely War memorial. If anyone knows of this family please get in touch so we can share info and photos. I am looking for information regarding the Robert Elijah Stinton family. Robert Elijah married Mary Ann Cooper 14 Oct 1813 in Isleham Cambridge. They had 11 children. Mr. Stinton passed 13 Apr 1856 in Isleham and Mary Ann passed 24 Dec 1892 in Ely. one of their children, William Stinton went on to wed Hannah Audus in 1844 in England. They then went to America were Hannah passed on. He them married Hannah Mansel of Donnington Wood Shropshire in Iowa, USA in 1864. From Annual Report of Inspectors of Prisons p 183-186 Ely House of Correction This Prison in conjunction with a Sessions House was built in 1821, at an expense of £11,176 It is also a House of Correction for debtors under sentence of the Court of Requests in the Isle of Ely. Debtors - Courts of Requests, by an Act of Parliament passed 1778 are established in the several hundreds of the Isle of Ely, for the recovery of debts not exceeding 40 shillings, and on non- payment of the same, the defendants are subject to imprisonment in the nearest House of Correction for 20 days, if the debt is under 20 shillings and 40 days if above. By this Actextending over an agricultural district, some of the prisoners are brought to the prisons at Ely and Wisbeach, for distances of 14 or 15 miles, for debts, frequently not exceeding 3 shillings, which are swelled in consequenceof the necessary expenses to 6 or 7 times their original amount.

From Parliamentary papers - Report of the Inspector of Prisons. p 179-181 Ely Franchise Gaol. The prison is situated in Gaol Street the building and site being the property of the See of Ely.... It is made use of for the confinement of debtors, and of prisoners for trial at the Sessions and Assizes. Keeper is 71 years of age and was appointed in 1803 by Bp of Ely Chaplain is a Minor Canon of the Cathedral - salary #60 p.a. Matron - salary #5 per annum. All the parties interested agree as to the necessity of providing a more competant Gaol, but a question has arisen between them, as to the extent of the Bishop of Ely's liability. - whether it is limited only to repairs of the Gaol, or whether it extends to the rebuilding, if required; in fact whether the expense is to be defrayed by the See, or out of the Isle of Ely. This point does not appear likely to be decided without anissue at law, although one of pressing necessity. There exists a practice in the Isle of Ely, of conveying prisoners to and from the Quarter Sessions holden at Wisbeach and Ely, in open carts, hired for the purpose, a...

William CROSS baptised in 1831. Towns associated with family Ely and Littleport. Town incorrectly spelt in some family records subsequently as Ealey. William CROSS married Sarah HOLMES in 1854 in St Marys Ely Cambridge. The HOLMES and CROSS familieshad several marriages between the two families.
