red mail Helen Caldwell married Thomas Hamilton before 1836
Helen Caldwell married a Thomas Hamilton before 1836 when they had a daughter Isabella. Isabella married William Bell McLachlan and had a child John. Isabella remarried navy gunner Robert Mullins in 1871- by which time Thomas was deceased (as were both previous spouses- Isabella and Robert were both widowed). On the marriage with Robert, Thomas (deceased) was listed as a baker. Parents are listed as Charlotte Parr and William Mullins of Robert and Helen Caldwell and Thomas (as Thos on the record) Hamilton. Isabellas last census is 1901 in Southsea Portsmouth Hants. She lives next door to John Bell Maclachlan. A weird thing about this one is that Isabella and William had a child called Lavona Campbell Bell MacLachlan but Isabella ends up having a child with Robert called Lavinia Campbell Mullins. Initially this seemed to be the same child but on the 1881 census Lavinia is only 3 and theres a baptism record showing her in 1879 as daughter to Isabella and Robert under the name Mullins. Dont really know why Isabella would name a child such a similar name to one she seems to have lost but that was a confusing one and didnt help. Given that Isabella and Robert married in Lochgilphead in Argyll and, although theres no record showing her marriage to William, their children were all baptised in the Lochgilphead region, you would expect Helen and Thomas to have a local marriage themselves but there is no local marriage between a Helen Caldwell and a Thomas Hamilton in the time it would have been likely. Theres a marriage in 1829 or something like that in Gorbals but this was a very deprived area and given that in later censuses Isabella turns up living with servants it seems unlikely her parents lived in such a deprived region. If this helps with regard to tracking the right Hamiltons and Caldwells, Isabella called her children (that werent named after parents) George, Mabel and John. Lavinia and her early namesake both had Campbell also. Her other children were a Wilhelmina with William and Robert with Robert. Was wondering whether anyone can help locate anything on these people (Helen and Thomas) and any help would be appreciated thank you.
