Alexander Whiteford, wife Margaret Cain/Kain/Caine. He was probably a fisherman although his son James described him as "Captain" Whiteford in the late 1890s in Melbourne Australia. Children James born Ireland 3 May 1826, christened Argyll 11 May 1826, Margaret and Katherine. He may also have had a son Archibald born 1819. Margaret didn't marry. Katherine married Donald Galbraith born Gigha 1803. They had no children and both died in Campbeltown in 1890.

They had a son named Alexander DOB about 1827 and was married to Isabella McNair. Alexander and Isabella had a son named Hector Downie - who happens to be my Great Grandfather. I am looking information about Eduardo Mac Eachen, born in 1800 presumably in Campbeltown. Son of Lachlan Mac Eachen and Flora Mac Neill He emigrated to Uruguay presumably in the 1820' decade, with his brother Donaldo. He married María del Carmen Alarcón on November 30th of 1830 in Montevideo. In 1835 we know by certain that he was in Uruguay, whre he bought lands. I am not a member of the family but a historian and I would greatly appreciate any information about him and his family. He was one of more important cattle breeders in Uruguay, founder of a Masonic Logia, and one of his sons, named also Eduardo (1835-1904), was an important protagonist in Uruguayan politics.

Archibald married a Flora McLeod in 1849 and had 3 children with her - Alexander Whioteford born 1850 Strath Inverness, John born 1854 Kintail Ross and Cromarty and Archibald born 1856 Kintail Ross and Cromarty. It is believed that John came to Canada when he was about 23 years old, eventually settling in Markdale, Ontario, Canada, where he married and had a family. Trying to find any info on the birth dates/places of William Mould (probably born England 1786) and Margaret Mackie (poss. McKie/McKay, maybe from Hamilton born around 1792). William Mould married Margaret at Campbeltown 23 December 1816. They had two daughters Margaret b.08Oct1822 and Elizabeth 03Dec1828. William was a seaman at this time but later in life was a valet and then a footman in the Campbeltown area, he died in Glasgow 06Dec 1865. Margaret died 10June1857 in Campbeltown and was buried in Kilkerran Churchyard. Margaret was my 4x great-grandmother.

Looking for information about James Whiteford born Ireland May 1826, christened Campbeltown 11 May 1826. James's parents were Alexander Whiteford and Margaret Cain/Kain. James (15) is listed on the 1841 Campbeltown Census with his mother, Margaret (50) and sister Cathrine (20). There are two other Whitefords on the 1841 Census who may be James's sisters, Rosann Whiteford and Margaret Whiteford. Cathrine married Donald Galbraith (Gigha 1813) in 1847. They died in Campbeltown in 1890. They had no children. James married Jean Wyl(l)ie of Stewarton in Campbeltown in 1849 and they migrated to Australia in 1852. Margaret Whiteford is listed as living with Catherine & Donald in the 1861 Census. I have been unable to find a further record of Rosann. Family history says that Alexander Whiteford was involved in the fishing industry in Campbeltown. James was listed as a labourer on the 1841 Census and a journeyman mason on the 1851 Census. If anybody knows of these families, has an interest in the fishing industry in Campbeltown or could provide information about what a journeyman mason did and any records which might have been kept for this trade I would be pleased to hear back from you. Looking for information about a family of Nicolson's who farmed at East Backs. Neil Nicolson (1809-1879) married Mary Inglis in the 1830s and moved to Campbeltown from Douglas in the early 1840s. They had 9 children some of whom moved to the Tighnabruich area and continued farming. Neil's oldest son James Nicolson (1838-1842) moved to New Zealand about 1860.
