red mail Photographs/Info re.Thatched Cottages at site. - (Ballyness - County Antrim)
Hello everyone, McCAWLEY;McAULAY;MACAULEY I just wondered if anyone could kindly help me with a photo/or, photos of old BALLYNESS village, (or, has been spelled BALLYNEOS), thatched cottages at CROSSROADS, Donegal - from around 1800s/early1900s. Also, I have been told my Dad used to drink at BIDDY'S BAR when he was a young man and I believe I have found it on the internet, though building somewhat expanded now, according to an old photo I saw on the website. I wondered if anyone might be able to share a photo from that era, of BIDDY O'BARNES pub and if possible a photo of the ELDERLY LADY who, I believe owned the pub. If I could just ask to ask one thing further, I wondered if anyone could tell me if there are still cottages standing at the Ballyness village site, it was my Dad's family home, he was born in 1894, my Grandfather was a farmer and died very young I believe. Great Grandad was a Land Steward I think. I visited there around late 1980s or early 1990s and saw the thatched cottage then. At that time, a gentleman called Mr. Feeney, I think he said, lived next door to the cottage, (amazing on the fiddle and made us a lovely cup of tea and very welcome). Only wish I had asked him so much more, as he knew my family. I believe the surname "Feeney" might be on one of the census forms I have, so think I am right with the gentleman's name. Census form found thanks to good advice from William. Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give me. Kind regards Elizabeth

In the 1911 Census, the family lived at 2 Doonan, Glencoy, Tickmacrevan, Antrim and consisted of John (42) Labourer/Quarryman, Jane (34) Elizabeth (14) Isabella (12) Joseph my father (7) John (1mth) Religion - Presbyterian. Another female child (Margaret) was born in 1915. My father was a member of the Grand Chapter of Black Knights - Prec.#794 encamped at Buckna and when he emigrated to Canada in 1924 his father John was listed as his next of kin and was living in Carnalbanagh, Owendoughty, Broughshane. It is believed Elizabeth (Lizzie) married Edward (Eddie) MURRAY in 1921 and in 1959 was living in Broughshane. They had a son named John MURRAY. It is understood that brother John was killed in a workplace accident (year unknown). Also do not know if he was married or had any children. Sister Margaret (Maggie) was known as widow BELL and living in Glenarm in 1959. Of sister Isabella, nothing is known after 1911. I would appreciate hearing back from anyone with information on the above mentioned family members. Phoebe

red mail HUNTER, Doagh, Grange of Doagh - (Doagh, and Grange of - County Antrim)
Mary HUNTER was my great grandmother. On her marriage certificate, her address was Doagh, Grange of Doagh. She married my great grandfather, James MCCLENAHAN, a teacher, living at Shankhill Road, Belfast on 19 March 1859 at York Street non-subscribing Presbyterian Church. From this certificate, I estimate her birth date to be about 1836. Her father was John HUNTER, a farmer. A John HUNTER appears both as tenant and landholder on the Griffiths valuation. There were a number of people with the surname, HUNTER in Doagh and Ballyclare on the survey. Were they related? I have no further information about the Hunter family and would be interested to contact anyone with interest in or information about the Hunters or Maclenahans (various spellings of the latter). We are fairly confident that Mary died at Belfast Royal Hospital (now, the Royal Victoria Hospital) on 1 Nov 1877. She does not appear with other Maclenahans in the cemeteries in Belfast. Her daughter was buried in Doagh graveyard earlier that year, so she may have been buried there, too.
