The Young family
In 1769, my ancestor David Rodger, b. Forfar 1743, married Katherine Young, daughter of Mr William Young, Messenger at Arms and Burgess of Forfar. There is no birth registration for Katherine, but she was probably born abt 1749; the Old Parish Records show 4 other children for Mr William Young: William b. 1753, Elizabeth b. 1754, Charlotte b. 1755 (who married William Potter, Junior) and James b. 1757. There seems to have been another son named Charles who emigrated to America around 1800, and persuaded a shoemaker named William Rodger to join him. I would be willing to share what information I have with anyone descended from and/or researching the Young family of Forfar.

Looking for descendants of Georgina & James Brown who may be able to tell me more about the life of my Great Aunt Georgina (Brown) Findlay. Georgina Brown (b) 26 May, 1862, and her brother James Brown (b) 9 May, 1867. Father - William Brown, and Mother, Isabella Brown (nee M.I. Findlay), Forfar. Georgina Brown married Frederick A. McP. Findlay, District of Montrose, County of Forfar on 29 Nov. 1893, and died Forfar, 21 Jan. 1943. Georgina & Fred Findlay left Montrose for Melbourne, Australia, with their children young Frederick (Freddy) and Ruth, hoping the climate would help young Freddy. My Great Uncle Fred Findlay took up the position of The Professional for Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne. Young Freddy died at age 16 in Melbourne, and eventually Ruth and her Mother Georgina took young Freddy's body back to Montrose where he is buried with his Mother Georgina. Georgina (Brown) Findlay stayed in Scotland. My Great Uncle Fred Findlay then went to America to join his older brothers Alexander & David Findlay, well known in Golf Circles in U.S.A. where he, Fred, designed Golf Courses and he died in Virginia in 1966 aged 94. I would be very grateful for any more information about the life of my Great Aunt Georgina (Brown) Findlay and her Brown relations. Thank You.

red mail Wm & JNO Don & Co. Manufacturer, Forfar
My neighbour has a silver-coloured medal presented to her grandfather, JAMES LAMONT, in 1899. It was presented by Wm & JNO Don & Co. Manufacturer in 1899, according to an inscription around the edge of it. It says in the centre "Science Art and Industry. Inscribed in tiny letters around the edge at the bottom is "A. Kirkwood & Sons, Sc" It is in a box which indicates it was made by Alex Kirkwood & Son Medallist 9 St. James Square, Edinburgh Est. 1826. Des. (presumably "designed") by J. Young. Thus the box explains the tiny writing around its base. My neighbour believes her grandfather was an engineer- he later had connections with the Titanic, sailing with it for part of its maiden voyage but leaving when it left, I think she said, Ireland??? Can anyone provide any information about Wm & JNO Don & Co? eg- as to WHO they were? What was their business? Any idea WHY JAMES LAMONT would have been presented with this medal? Do you know anyone presented with a similar medal? If so, any details would be appreciated. I wonder whether Alex Kirkwood, who I believe are still in existence today, would have any relevant details of the creation of the medal. Elizabeth
